Threads are a tool, and just like any other tool, you need to know where it is apropriate to use them.

Some common places you can find threads are, to load files in the background, network code, or "allways on" AI.

Using threads carries with it the responsability of creating and managing system to avoid data corruption, caused by "thread racing"... these are complex aspects you'll need to learn about multithreading programming.

The short answer is: If you have to ask if threads are a good thing, then you shouldnt be using them. Give yourself more time to learn about them.

I recomend this Book on the subject.

Good luck :)

You don't read books? I have a feeling you're not going very far in the game industry...

That's a very bold sentence. There are many ways in learing and the single best is just try it out. I can't say i'm in the industry, but i do have knowledge in it, and the only book i owned and read about the topic is the OpenGL Reference manual.

That's not the best way. If you are not prepared then blind trial and error is the most time-consuming, frustrating and inefficient way possible to learn something. Get the books out, man!
