Has anyone ever written a ping program before? I've made one, and I want to perform multicast pings, but only unicast pings seem to be working. (A multicast ping works as expected using the ping utility, and looking at it's code I haven't found anything special they do for multicast :/). (using Linux 2.6.5) [edit] Found it :/ Multicast pings require a multicast TTL of 1. [Edited by - Magmai Kai Holmlor on June 23, 2004 8:09:00 PM]

I don't know what you intend to use this "ping" for, but doesn't multicasting not work over the internet. As far as i've read up multicast packets don't pass through routers that haven't specifically configured for multicast.
And a ping over a LAN seems a bit useless to me.
Unless I'm missing something and ICMP ping support multiple addresses. Or the tool/command you use for pinging supports multiple addresses.

You're correct about multicasts, just take a look at the configuration of a Linksys router and you'll see that the "multicast" option must be set to yes before any packets of this sort will be permitted to be sent out.

To multicast over the internet, you fist have to tunnel into the MBone. The application will run on a private MAN that has multicasting enabled.
