That banner up there on the top-right corner, yes that one. It's evil. Everytime a monster.com ad is showing up, the one with that scrolling stuff, I can't use my mouse scroll button. I have to manually drag the scroll bar. No idea what's going on. Furthermore, since I am using a laptop and that freaking ad is way too animated, my laptop's fans would produce some very disturbing noise just like when I play video games but this is only a freaking banner ad. Damn advertisement.

Once the site allows for subscriptions, will the banners go away?

I have not seen this monster add, but I don't think they can capture mouse events even they can only be Gifs. However, I am not sure what file types gamedev allows.

I've seen a few flash ads, it could be a flash one.

I don't think a gif would be too bad.

That sounds a very good idea to me.

It's a flash.

We'll always have banners on the site, but the plan is to eventually transition to having all of our ads be relevant for game developers, even if that means having some of them be non-paying ads for affiliates and such.

The addition of premium services won't by itself be enough to make this transition. It'll be just one piece of the puzzle.

As for the behavior of this ad, what you're describing is very odd. Even though it's Flash, it shouldn't be able to do that - it shouldn't have the focus unless you click on it. I've tested it with IE and Mozilla and haven't had a problem with it.

Using FireFox 0.9. First it will display profession and state names like "Mechanic, CA", and wait until a monster comes from the right. That's when the mouse scroll stop functioning.

edit: works fine in IE. Maybe my FireFox?

Works fine for me, and at 1600x1200, I barely notice the ads.

I have Firefox 9.0, and it works fine for me (the ad is there right now).

The answer is Mozilla Firefox with the Adblock plugin.

Yep! Adblock is awesome.

And that noise your laptop is making isn't from your fans, it's from your LCD display. Mine does it too when certain animated things are on screen.

I'm not up to date on the latest LCD technologies, but I'm pretty sure they don't have any moving parts. So how could it possibly be making noise? Maybe if its backlit, you could year the light turn on and off, but that wouldn't be image dependent.

Mine releases a high pitched whining noise when at certain resolutions with animation... In linux I have some Apple II screensaver that makes the screen make tons of noise. Perhaps it has something to do with speaker interference since they're right by the monitor.

The first time I clicked on this thread, I got the Monster ad. My trackball's wheel worked just fine. I have Mozilla 1.5, in case it matters.
