I'm currently working on a non-game related project which requires that I design and implement a User Interface toolkit/API using a specific 2D graphic library. At the moment, I'm in the design phase, and was looking for good online resources since I don't want to reinvent the wheel... I've tryed google and found some articles, but I was wondering if someone knew a very good tutorial/article about user interface architecture design. Basically, the system must feature window decoration, basic buttons, text fields, edit fields, layouts, and so on... Any help would be very appreciated! Thanks in advance.

There's two that spring to mind.

A GameDev user (HellRizzer) has created an OpenGL GUI tutorial on his site.

There's also Crazy Eddie's GUI System on sourceforge. This uses DirectX for rendering.

If you're after a cross-platform Windows-like GUI, you can take a look at wxWindows which is designed for applications.

Failing that, you can make your own directX GUI based off this series on GameDev

Hope this helped.
