Hi everyone, my question: how far i can look witch RAGE ATI 128 or any other ati or gf, is here a limit ??? how about 10000 pixel ? i have tried to look this far and it works, but if i try to draw more that 1000 dots then it dies. so can someone tell where are the limits for far, dots and stuff ???? one more: is it a good idee to use a sphere to draw a planet or shuld i use an 3d model ?

You can set the far clip plane with gluPerspective or glFrustum. Just make sure you switch to the GL_PROJECTION matrix mode first.

Depth is measured using floating point values, so the limit is very high, even with only a 16-bit Z buffer. It's measured in OpenGL units which are arbitrary measures of distance; ie, they can be feet, metres or kilometres, it's up to you (I'm not sure how you got the idea they're measured in pixels).

The only issue is the level of precision you can get. Some very old graphics cards may be limited to a 16-bit Z buffer, and sometimes a 24-bit Z buffer may be necessary. Low precision can cause Z-fighting, but there are ways around this. See the Forum FAQ for info about precision, Z-fighting and how best to set your near and far clip planes.
