I've heard of a OSS program called FreeSpice. Spice is quite powerful. However, FreeSpice is both engineering software, and open source. Which means the user interface will probably make you want to gouge out your eyeballs. But still, my cheap friends all use it, so it must be functional.

*edit: I'm coming to the conclusion I may have the name wrong...google is turning up absolutely squat, However, "free spice" does offer some alternatives.

I've used Crocodile Clips fairly extensively, and it's very easy to use but it's also not overly advanced. By this I mean it'll either be hard or even impossible to simulate advanced or complex systems on Crocodile clips e.g. you're not gonna design a robot or an amplifier on it (well you may be able to, but I'd definetely prefer something more advanced).

word of caution...google on 'free spice' not 'freespice' (space omitted)

spice is vlsi cad software, iirc, which is a little different than something like livewire.

*edit: perhaps you mean gnu electric? sorry, i don't know much about this area. but i do remember some open/free version of magic floating around...but magic is design software, not simulation

I just finished my first year in an electronics course.
We used a program in the Cadence Orcad suite called Pspice.

There is another one from Electronic Workbench called Multisim.

And finally there is also a program called LabVIEW which is very good.
