Today the UPS man brought to my door a nice little package. Included was the Adobe Creative Suite Premium Education Edition. Not only did it include Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive and Acrobat Professional, it also came with 90 minutes of video training, two full DVDs of resources and extras and the PageMaker Plug-in Pack. To add to my excitement, when I registered online, I was able to choose from four different gifts, I went with the Brioso Pro font collection, a font group that I was looking at a few days ago. So in summary: Adobe Creative Suite Premium Education w/extras: $380 Free Brioso Pro font group: $250 value An answer to poor college students interest in graphic design/printing: Priceless All I can say at this point is, [grin] *runs off to play with his new toy*

Well, it's $380 and you get all that I listed above and a free gift for online registration. I figure all that stuff would have cost me close to $2,000 because the standard version of the suite is $1,299, the fonts are $250, video training who knows, and those two resources and extras DVDs are jam packed with plug-ins, documentation and additional software. All in all a darn nice deal, saving $1,600+ [grin]

Yeah, I figured that out just one second ago! [lol].

What about the license? Can you distribute your artworks?

You didn't really save 1.6K because they are the educational version, so they do have restrictions (ie. not making money in any way, shape or form).

I don't plan on making money, I just want to be trained as best I can in the use of this stuff so if/when I go into technical writing, which is a viable option for me, I'll have the tools of the trade (including Office) under my belt.

I know I really didn't save $1.6k, but it's nice to think about. [grin]

He can distribute his artwork freely. "Educational version" usually just means "for non-commercial purposes."

Can you at least upgrade them to the commercial version?

I think you can, but it's best to ask an Adobe rep.

Kudos for not resorting to piracy and claiming that you are just learning, or can't afford it because you're a student, etc.

Thanks! [smile] I'm a HUGE advocate of supporting companies that provide creative outlets for individuals, whether it's through words (Office), art (Adobe) or music (iTMS). Anyway, there's something special about owning the box and having your name on the splash every time you start the program up. Definitely adds to the experience that it's actually mine. [grin]

It's still overpriced, honestly.

Ever use a student license of Visual Studio? It's about $30, and you can distribute your apps if you want (there's really no way for anyone to know it's a student version in the first place, since it compiles normally).

I've contemplated and contemplated, and I just can't honestly justify the cost of most of Adobe's products most of the time, given the costs of the competition and their feature sets.

*shrug*

I would definitely not support a greedy company such as Adobe, Discreet, etc.
I would rather use the equivalent OSS products, and donate them some money.
I have no use for Office, but if I would need something like that I'd just use Open Office.

Target market: creative communications industry.
Target customers: creative pros, creative services providers.

Price: Inexpensive for high-end industry-standard tools.

Remember that most successful graphic design firms charge $80-120 per hour, and that's just the design fee. There are usually several more fees for copywriting services, production, etc., and an average of three to five separate fees per design firm in the United Sates. The full-service and advertising companies may have 50+ fees, but not all will be active. For example, advertising developers have to pay actors and pay for their food too.

Unless you're a big corporation, most MS Office tools are fairly cheap. Open Office / Star Office don't even hold a candle to it.

If Photoshop was actually significantly superior to Paintshop pro, or GIMP, I'd say the cost was justified. It's really not.

It's like paying $30 a month for AOL when you could pay $9.95 a month for any ordinary dial up.

MS Office is bloatware. Who the hell uses all those toolbars anyway?
Most of the people/companies use maybe 20% of it, and I believe Open Office is pretty functional, isn't it?

MS Office is more than just Word.

MS Office is very useful to business-users.

Open Office is nice, but it's really just a open source clone.

I use MS Office 2004 Mac, it has a great program called Entourage (basically Outlook with Project added in) to coordinate my other team members, keep milestones set and group all my contacts, e-mails, charts, documents and notes in a project. I use excel to do my check balancing/stock options and powerpoint is good for when I need to get my ideas out in a form other than straight writing. All in all, I did pay a premium price, but I got a premium product in which I use every program at least twice a day. Adobe will soon become my other daily activity. [smile]
