I don't know about the second book, as I haven't bought/read it (as far as I can see, its just an updated edition to the old book), but I've read the first book by Dave and Kevin, and it is one of the most valuable books I have ever read. Seriously, the book contains pretty much all you need to get you into basic game programming, and anything else you need to know would probably be covered in other, more advanced books. As an introduction, I seriously can't fault it. Good job guys :D.

I still have the original book, and it seems fine to me. In the end, it's more of a personal decision, though.

I don't have the first book but I do have the second one. In the front of the book there's a "What's New" section and here is the gist of it: This book covers most of chapters 1-13 in the old book. A few sections have been entirely rewritten and the rest has been reviewed and updated to OpenGL 1.5. A few new sections have been added to cover new functionality that has been added to OpenGL since the last book, and to lay the foundation for the next volume.

Basically it seems like the new book is mainly a compilation of all the OpenGL material from the old book, updated to OpenGL 1.5.

I'm gonna follow in AABBFFLLUUGG's footsteps here and announce my praise for this book. I read the NeHe tutorials online and while they were helpful, they only really explained specific implementations of certain OpenGL concepts. Dave and Kevin's book does a great job of explaining the OpenGL concepts so you have a good foundation to be able to go out and implement things yourself. I would recommend it to anyone interested in starting OpenGL, and I eagerly await the Advanced book.

I wonder if I should buy the second book too. I have the first, but the binding broke the second I opened it. Now it's got packing tape all over to hold it together and looks very ugly on my shelf with otherwise perfect condition books. [razz] Made of such high quality materials, this. [wink]

But yeah, great, um ... contents. But then, the original poster already knew that since he, you know, owns it. The Advanced book will be pretty kick-ass, I imagine ...

The same thing happened to my one :\ Its an invaluable book though and really helped me to get into game dev'ing.

My only complaint about the original book is how many errors are in it and how many are uncorrected on the errata page. If the new book fixes those it might be worth getting for that alone.
I like the DARK layout!

We need to know about them to put them on that page. Everything we've heard about is listed there.

But yeah, the new book shouldn't have many errors.
