Hello everyone, I'm programing a 3D game engine but I want a BEEAUTIFUL game! I know I know it isn't easy but I thought to some nice effects and particulary to shadows. I know DirectX 9 can do it but I don't know what code with DevC++ I have to add for creating very nice shadows (realistic) like half-life 2, for characters and environments.
When I see life my death is back. When I see death I see Eternity.

Here are some words to google for

Shadow Mapping

Stencil Shadows
Fast and Robust Shadows //should bring up a pretty good white paper.

Doing a search on those two should bring up other things you can jump from.

As just a comment, beautiful game engines are not in technical capabilities such as shadows or normal mapping. It really does come down to the artist. Pure poly pushing with proper texturing can give you very very good results. Shadows and normal mapping add that little extra touch though, but most of the beauty still relies on good polygons and textures.

Hello

Its very true.. if you dont have really skilled low poly 3d artist, dont even consider stencil shadows. Even with only one light, if you have not 'valid' or to complex meshes, you can get beauty- and lagfull game. Trust me, i have tried it in my project and in this very moment im drawing shadows on textures in paintshop, so i could switch damn stencil shadows off.
