I've just been assigned a task where I have to make sure ALL the code in our project will work on machines with JAVA version 1.1 installed. However, I can't download and install the 1.1 SDK to test it so i'd need a tool that'll search through the code and determine the version needed to execute the code. is there such a tool or do i have to do it manually by searching through the documentation

You can get it here: http://java.sun.com/products/archive/index.html.

Also, if you have Windows 95/98/NT and possibly ME it should have a 1.1.7 version of the runtime.

Why can't you download it? Is it because you can't find it or because you can't install it due to access restrictions? Because if it's the former, you can get it through the product archive on the sun website. I think you may specifically be looking for this page.

But, you don't really need to do that. You can force your current java compiler to compile towards the 1.1 version. When you run your compiler, you add the -target flag with the 1.1 parameter. It would look like this:
javac -target 1.1 Whatever.java
. Much better than downloading the old SDK.

However, you may definitely want to download the old VM, because it had some quirky issues that will require more than just standards compliant code to get to work properly.

"javac -target 1.1 Whatever.java"
This will make sure format of the compiled code is compatible with java 1.1, but uit will NOT check if the used methods existed already in java 1.1. To be sure, you should indeed try the old JRE.
Why do my programs never work on other computers?
