Ok, I'm getting a computer as a graduation present, but it's got a paltry P4 1.6Ghz. Everything else is pretty dandy, 2x 120GB HDs, Radeon 9600 Pro, 1GB DDR RAM, etc. It's just that the processor is a bit slow for my tastes (I've become accustomed, in the past few months, to a P4 with over twice the processing power, with hyperthreading as well). What I'm wondering is, what socket is that P4? Will the motherboard be compatible with the latest and greatest P4s? I have around 700$ to play with, so I want to get the best I possibly can.

If you can find out what motherboard is in it, you can find out which chipset it supports. From there, you can check Intel's site, if it's an Intel chipset, to see what the chipset is compatible with, or you can check the motherboard vendor's site to see what processors it claims to be compatible with.

If you've got that much to spend, the Pentium 4 3.4 Ghz with hyperthreading only cost me $415 US. I ordered from zipzoomfly.zom. They seemed to have good prices and free shipping too!

Anything more than the 3.4 would cost quite a bit more. The extreme edition processors cost roughly $900 and $1000 for the 3.2 and 3.4 respectively.

That's exactly why'd I'd just ask for money, or ask if you could build a computer within the price range. The graphis card could use an upgrade as well O_O.
