Check your PC for adware/spyware. Some adware programs hijack your browser with a plugin and attempt to add 'sponsored' links.

Have you noticed any other odd behaviour?

Odd. Works fine in IE...

It just started to look like this a few seconds ago (Firefox)

It's probably your browser thinking the page encoding is different than it actually is. I used to get that a lot with IE (it would use whatever encoding it wanted even if sent a proper content-type stating the encoding).

question marks were replacing other some stuff in other threads I viewed about a week ago. It's stopped since then.

I see it a lot on the front page on news items that use the pound sign, i.e ?35.00 where I can tell it should be a pound sign based on the context.
