On mcafee, I got this message: A computer at IP Address 64.12.29.72 has attempted an unsolicted connection to TCP port 3031 on your computer. Should I be worried?

It's probably some random scan. This is why you should install a firewall if you use Windows because there are entire subnets of stupid machines searching for other Windows machines to infect.

I get between 50-200 connection attempts on typical trojan/virus ports each day. I tend to be port scanned about 20 times a week as well. Its nothing to be worried about. "Hackers"/"pubescent teenagers" tend to scan high bandwidth IP ranges constantly to look for people who happen to have run a virus/trojan. The greater your bandwidth, the more likely you'll be randomly scanned. Every individual on the IP range I am in, is on a T3 line with unlimited bandwidth.

Unsuprisingly, that IP belongs to AOL. :)

I failed to mention, you may often also be scanned by your own ISP. They will look for open ports where viruses often connect or open HTTP/FTP/TELNET/etc ports. The first for your own protection, the second because many ISP's prevent prohibit running servers in their terms of service.

Not so great. The previous versions have about the same amount of pseudo-useful information, and now you can pick them up used, which is a good thing considering the slumping economy and skyrocketing computer book prices.

In my opinion, the safest thing to use is a hardware firewall. For instance, smart viruses could disable your software firewall without you noticing. This is next to impossible on hardware.

Hardware firewalls need software as well for NAT etc Just get an old 486 with 8meg ram, floppy drive ( dont need a harddrive ) and install a floppy based Firewall/router . I recommend thewall and ipkungfu.
I was influenced by the Ghetto you ruined.
