Hey all, I'm chipping away on a little Isometric engine, and I'm looking to implement my characters as 3D models. So basically, I have the iso-tiles as textured quads on the background, then I want to render the models, and then the next layer of quads (ie, trees). I have 2 issues to conquer though: 1. How can I render the character at the exact positio and make him look 2Dish? I can't specify a point to render, as the point would be in world-space where as my orthographically projected tiles are screen-space. How can I overcome this barrier and what steps does it involve? 2. Possibly related to the first, but if I render a character and he's 3D, how do I tile another tile infront of him? Wouldn't his polygons clip through the quad? Anyone able to provide any insight? Please note that I'm using tiles, and not a giant 2D background like something Final Fantasy would use. I can't use a "clipping map", it all has to be specified in the tiles so the world can dynamically be created and changed. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

Well, I assume that all your tiles are the same size, so you can choose some arbitrary number to represent how big your 2d tiles are in 3d (say one iso tile would represent a 1x1 area in 3d). Then it would be a pretty easy task to go from a 2d tile to a 3d location in space.

You would also need to work out what camera angle (45,45,45?), distance, and what FOV to use to look correct with the 2d tiles. This would probably involve a bit of experimentation and tweaking.

As for drawing 2d tiles on top of the characters, simply turn off the Z test (D3DRS_ZENABLE) and draw the tiles.
