I've made a couple of *simple* 2D games in the past and I've done a couple of decent 3D demo apps as well as a computer science degree, so I know most of the individual components involved in programming a game. Now I have a little time and want to use my experience to create a half decent, if simple, game. The only thing is, where to start? Like I say, I know the components (DirectX, some physics and collision detection, AI, C++, etc) and I have an idea and a friend to make some mesh models, sounds, etc, but the overall structure and methodology of game programming eludes me. I want to minimize the "damn, I wish I'd thought of that earlier, then I could have made the original design accomodate it, rather than having to 'bolt it on' now, making all the code messy" - a problem I encounter all too often in my projects. Well, that was long winded. But that said, I've been looking at the gamedev articles on game programming and there are an absolute sh*tload. I was wondering if any of you knew which ones are good in particular, or if there are any other good articles out there on the web. Your advice much appreciated.
Dave.

Software Engineering will pretty much tell you how to start a project.

1. Identify components in your game.
2. Define interactions between them.
3. Implementation.
