I didn't rate you at all in the C#/C++ thread, if that's any comfort.

Well, I do sometimes get rated down just for stating different opinions, or sometimes even for reasons that I don't even know.

But who cares?

I'm going to vote you down now for using 'gay' as an insult. [wink]

And I'm going to vote you down now for using 'gay' in a reference into which 'gay' was used in an insulting manner.[wink]

But seriously, don't worry too much about the point system. If anything take pride in the fact that others are so offset by your words that they feel they must mark you down, that means you've established yourself and your beliefs. [smile]

You're wrong. Since implementing the system, we've seen a *huge* decrease in the number of crap posts and the amount of flaming that goes on around here. People are being more careful about what they post. That was the intent, and despite some minor glitches, I'd say it's been very successful.

I can't agree more. I really love it because people are actually posting fun yet mature posts, hardly ANY flaming and the discussions, especially the political/religious ones have been very engaging rather than insulting. It's good to see people using their heads and the point system really does make you think before you hit the reply button.

Just a thought... Might it help to require or at least provide an optional explanation for the rating given? That way people might second guess things if they're going to have to say outright that they rated someone down for having a different opinion.

The system works.... (mostly).

I think rating people down shouldn't be anonymous, and a short explanation should have to be posted for others to (re)view.

I have an idea then. If someone wants to rate you down SOOO Bad, like 5 points, they have to get a moderator to check out the thread. I think that's a good system.

I don't think the moderators want to take time out of their lives to do stuff like this. No system could be perfect, but I think the one currently in place is the best one for the site.

I disagree. I think that negative ratings should be anonymous, but a short explanation should be allowed.

This one certainly doesn't. Just because person A doesn't like person B doesn't mean a thread needs moderation. If there's a legitimate problem with the thread such as personal insults, illegal activity or work-unsafe images, there's a "Report this Post to a Moderator" link on every post.

What do you think? I think it's gay ... blah, blah, blah.

I stopped reading at "gay". Referring to something like a rating system as "gay", or anything as "gay" in a derrogatory (don't quote me on that spelling) manner is insulting, really. No, I'm not gay, I'm quite confident in my sexuality, I'm just sick of all the gay references is all.

On a side note, I know how you feel, and the raters seem rather fickle on how they rate you. You practically have to go above and beyond to keep your rating, if you slack off, your rating suffers.

I guess it's just how things work around here. :\

I'm sure this has been answered before, but why is the system based on 1000 as a starting point?

Well i half agree with the starter of this topic, i start the "any christains here" topic and down went my ratings, even though its probs been on of the most constructive threads here for a while, i honestly do think its a pointless system, since why onot just ban people that cause problems,

I think it's a good idea that you aren't able to see negative ratings. That could lead to "you rated me down eh noob, well now I'll pwn ur rating!!" kind of circular crap rating.

Hah not quite; I have no qualms flaming people whom I know have rated me down to 0 already.

So for asking people to debate Yahoo against Google, and C++ against C#, I'm docked over 120 points? Yet you tell me the system is just fine. This website is a huge resource for me, and the thought that I'll be banned in a matter of weeks due to people's immaturity is unsettling.

Banned? You won't be banned due to a low rating. You still have to piss off someone important to do that.

Just look at AAFFBBGG... or whatever. His rating's been at 0 for as long as I can remember. I don't know exactly why, but it is. He still participates in discussions, and It doesn't seem like too many people are setting ratings thresholds, because they still respond to him. If you're honestly just trying to be mature, your rating will NEVER go that low just by disagreeing with people, so don't worry too much about it.

Well maybe that's a clear sign that many people just find that sort of behavior annoying? And as far as I can tell this thread has cost you quite a lot to.

The reason could be as simple as people don't think it's very helpfull to create debates just to scratch your itch, and even more people find it annying when you complain on a free service and the way other people rate you because you think it's wrong.

Maybe stopping a second to ponder about the situation instead of complaining is in order?

And really you're not among the lowest ranked members by a far shot and as long as you don't do anything insanly stupid you won't get banned.
