Microsoft's pusing it again.

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,116853,00.asp Right, so what is Microsoft trying to acomplish here? Seems as if they're targeting the hardware market now. Trying to take a cut of smaller companies (like newegg, tigerdirect, etc..) profits? Seems low.
It's what they do.
If you want to complain about something that Microsoft does, then complain about DirectX. At least porting it would help somebody, instead of all this stupid crap over what comes "packaged" with each new copy of Windows (and for $200+ per upgrade, I'd better have some software included).

This is the only part I have a problem with:Quote:
peripherals that it plans to advertise in the Windows XP Start Menu and the Internet Explorer Web browser.
I couldn't care about the store itself, but for god's sake, don't force the ads on me.
"damn television, always forcing ads on me"

Maybe you missed the line that said, "If I paid for..."
:-p.
Besides that, you're not really paying fair market value for cable channels anyway. If you were, you'd be paying $5 per channel per month or so.
I wouldn't mind paying 5 USD/month per channel, because I would select only 2-3 channels, and that would be it. I don't watch TV in the US because it has too many commercials, so watching a 90 minutes movie takes 3 hours. I don't have 3 hours to spend watching a 90 minutes move.
Why do people try to take the smallest things and turn them into Microsoft conspiracies? I am definitely looking forward to this. If the big names in hardware are all able to be queried instantly in one service with major marketshare, that will breed serious competition between the companies that have their hardware prices listed. This will result in lower prices for the enduser - me.
The Microsoft bashing is just pathetic. If you don't like DirectX - don't use it when programing your applications. If you don't like Internet Explorer - don't use it. If you don't like Windows - don't use it. If you don't like this new service that will be offered - don't use it. There are countless alternatives.

How about a platform not controlled by Microsoft?
Ok, how about C#, the CLI, XML, and all the other standards that MS is the biggest backer and does not control?
Furthermore, why would MS want to push a platform that they don't support? That's just...uh...well...
You can talk to me about .NET once they let the Mono project have access to the patent on Windows.Forms.
I'm just saying, people seem perfectly content to complain about Microsoft not being all friendly when it comes to inclusion of their own software in their OS, and yet nobody who complains here will even bother standing up and complain about issues that affect users of other platforms.
I know a lot of people here will look at Longhorn and go "wah wah wah Microsoft will watch my every step on the internet and restrict the software I can run, I'm going to go switch to Linux" just like they said about Windows Product Activation in XP, and then when Longhorn rolls around, surprise surprise, nobody'll switch.
I'd rather support my pet cause then worry about the fact that Microsoft might push a niche business like Newegg into the poorhouse; everyone here seems glad to as well. And that's my last word in this thread.

It's not about the end user here, it's about MS using their monopoly on the desktop market to get into a new field, which is morally (and maybe even legally) unfair.

Quote:I suppose by that same logic, Apple Computer should never have created iTAMS since it leveraged their monopoly on Mac desktops and excluded all music software apart from iTunes.
