Configuring Linux

Hello, I have been realizing lately how much more I like linux than win XP... The few things holding me back are: Autocomplete/VisualAssist in VC++ desktop customization I currently have litestep, and alternate shell, on windows and have it customized to just how I love it. I have a large array of multikey hotkeys (example, Win+I, Win+B opens Inet/Bookmarks - My gamedev bookmarks) I have multipule groups, Internet, Games, Programming, Movie related, Music related, etc Each with many hotkeys inside. Is there a way to set this kind of thing up in a linux setup? Also, I have a very minimalist desktop setup: link How simple is it to do something similar on a linux setup? BTW, I am currently most familiar with RedHat, but really dont have much of a preference of distribution. Thanks! Dwiel [Edited by - Tazzel3D on July 13, 2004 6:55:46 PM]

Theres a program called
xbindkeys
which lets you configure hotkeys. As for autocomplete, have a look at Anjuta or Kdevelop - these are the two most popular IDE's in Linux and I'm sure they have autocomplete.

Fix the image tag, plz.

Edit: Autocomplete in Anjuta doesn't work nearly as good as VC++. Each version gets better than the last, though.

Also, your LiteStep shell looks a lot like Blackbox or something like that.
I like the DARK layout!

Thanks for the help so far. Sorry about the link... I had a thunderstorm here and didnt have a chance to review my post. The url was right, my redirect host must have been messin somethin up...

Anyway, I'll check out that hotkey program, as it looks pretty good for my quick overview.

I have used KDevelope, and it was much more bloated than I really liked. What would be ideal, would be some kind of emacs plugin type thing... I love everything else about the emacs/terminal setup other than the lack of autocomplete stuff. The only other beef I have about developing in linux, which I didnt mention before, is debugging. I love the debugger in VC++ and ddd just doesnt seem to cut it for some reason. Might just be my infamiliarity. Are there any otehr debuggers that people recommend?

About blackbox, I was unaware that was a linux shell. If that is the case It is probobly exactly what I am looking for. What I like about litestep is it's simple configuration scripts, but I assume every shell is pretty much the same, I forget why I chose it over the others as a matter of fact...

Thanks for the help! Only a few more hurtles to pass and I can migrate back into linux!

Hrmm, I actually liked Emacs better than VC++ for coding... Ever since I learned about Emacs, VC++ has just seemed such a simple and clumsy environment...

Real men use Vim, we all know Emacs is a virus. [wink]

Of course, to each their own.

EDIT - Tazzel, man, RedHat is no longer being made for the end user, they switched over to the Fedora project which is still in its larval stage, really. I suggest something like Suse Professional 9.1, that'll make you love Linux pretty fast. Then, after using that for a while, go Slack and you'll never go back. [wink]
