the main thing holding me off from using d3d is this d3dframework and d3dapp libraries. are these used in most commercial games, or is this strictly for demo purposes only? i need the framework for loading in x files, but i''d rather load in x files without this framework crap. what do you guys use? does everyone using d3d use the framework library? a2k

Well, I don't know if any commercial gamedeveloper uses the d3d framework that came with the dx sdk (I don't think they do). I think most people, (including me) write their own framework. Doing so helped me to better understand the basics of directX. BTW I used the sdk framework to look up some dx functions and mechanisms. Basically you only have to do this once, because initialization work in most apps will remain the same.

I use a slightly modified version of the framework. why bother writing an entirely new framework when you have a practically complete and thouroughly tested one ready to use (and edit)?

the only reasons i can think of is to learn (as cruZ said) or if the existing framework doesnt offer the features you need (but in this case, i would probably just add the required features to the existing framework).

dont reinvent the wheel (sorry about the cliche ).

okay, so i wouldn''t experience any massive performance hit if i used the framework? i really just need it cuz i can''t figure out how to load x files without the framework. unless someone HAS figured this out.

also, what direct x/3d books do you guys recommend?
