I pretty new to programming and i was thinking about coding a 3D modeller. It wouldnt have to be very sophisticated but what i want to know is how difficult it is to make a program like this and should a newbie take on such a challenge.

Depends... If you just want to make a fairly simple one (basic polygon editing ability, creating spheres, boxes, ect. Nothing fancy), it shouldn''t be too hard. You''ll still have to do a lot of work, but compared to doing a modeler that supports animation, advanced texturing, rendering, curves, ..., it''s a piece of cake. (I''ve been contemplating making a fairly complicated modeler, and the job just keeps growing)

If you are a newbie like you said, forget it. Your hands will be full with 2D alone. You will be incredibly confused if you attempt 3D as a newbie. Now, if you mean newbie in a different sence...OK.

3d modelers are pretty challenging to make if you''re just starting out with programming.

You have your work cut out for you.

I suggest handcrafting 3D models first and then rendering them through OpneGL/DirectX. This will give you an indication of what you need to know.

What the heck, try rendering 2 cubes where each face has a different texture, then add MIP-Mapping, light maps, illumination maps and while your at it bump mapping. When you do that send me the code. I''d like to know how to do it

www.jawed.com/jawmd2/ You can pick up the source and program there.

It is a very simple 3d modeller for Quake 2 models. D''load the program and some .md2 model files so you can see the program in action.

If anyone knows of any other 3d modeller source''s, plz post!!!

Thanks alot guys for taking the time to post.

I say i'm a newbie because i havent really done that much hands on programming but I have been reading about it for some time now and know all about functions pointers arrays loops and all that stuff.

Also I have looked into things like z-buffers, vectors, matrices and such so I think I have a fairly good understanding of how to go about such things but its one things knowing all this stuff and actually getting down to the nitty gritty and coding it.

I was intending to make this modeller as my university degree project but I might try and persuade my lecturers let me make a game instead.

Check this out!

http://www.cornflakezone.com/

It has tutorials and a working example (either in the works or already there) on doing exactly what you want to do.
