You could use swShader. I imagine it'd save you a lot of work.

If you want to write one for yourself you could by Trickz of the 3D Game Programming Gurus Advanced 3d Graphics and Rasterization

The book teaches you how to write a software renderer from scratch.

in directX? it's pretty easy... you can ask for a "Software vertex processing".. (~30-100x faster than MS reference code). Or you could ask for the MS reference code, but u don't really want to do that kinda performance, do ya?

Take a look here, if you're intereseted in writing your own software renderer. The thing you want is the "3D graphics programming tutorial", there's two versions of it on that page, you'll probably the second one.

That does not put you into a software rendering mode. It simply means that vertices will be transformed in software rather than being passed off to the video card. It will still use the video card to do the actuall rasterization.

Check out the other links. The book suggested is a good one, although I have come to hate LaMothe's coding style. There are software renderers available (swShader, for instance) or you can roll your own, depending on what features you want it may not be that difficult.
