Hey there, just popped in to say we''ve got a position open for an assistant programmer for The Shard. Website is at www.theshard.com and horribly neglected because right now we pretty much spend all of our time on the game itself.
Well as to what the project is, it''s a fantasy themed online-only FPS which is to be pitched in the beginning of this December. We are all currently working on the Demo (milestone in October), but our one industry programmer is obviously under a VERY heavy workload developing the engine.
As far as the engine goes, it will support the newest industry standards for hardware, eg the ATI Radeon card. We are using 3D Studio MAX as a level editor (you may want to be a bit familiar with that), giving us pretty much the freedom to do much more in the way of gameplay and eyecandy than today''s FPS games do.
Qualifications:
1) You need to be very self-motivated and able to keep in touch on a daily basis. If you know you can''t devote about 5 hrs a day to this, it''ll be too much for you.
2) You should have a good understanding of C++, DirectX (we''re using 8, but if you didn''t get the beta just make sure you know your way around the previous versions),math, and some physics.
3) Don''t try to bite off more than you can chew. If you just finished reading TOTWGPG (hope I spelled it right), you won''t be doing yourself any favors by applying for this one. Learning''s good but we''re on a tight schedule.
4) Know a bit about the technology used in current FPS games. Shaders (as used in Quake3) would be a good example of this, as you will be working on them as well as others.
Well as far as payment, et al. goes, this is pretty much a non-paying position until we get funding in December. The company itself is a registered business, and the original team (7 ppl including you) will all carry an equal share in it. During this time you will be working with the engine (and later on help develop it further), writing game code, and pretty much be trained to take on a senior position after this game ships (ship date estimate is Summer/Fall 2001).
Mail me at midnight@theshard.com for more info, (including that of the game and design, etc.)
Thanks
