Im glad to see alot of people feel the way that I do,

I for one am jaded with new computer games, and wish that there were games like the ones i've played in the past, thus that is why I am here.

The last adventure game I picked up was a Dreamcatcher title, which was 'The Messanger',I got one screen into it and the UI was so unfriendly I shut it down, never to play it again, I have played a bunch of thier games and havent liked any of them, they call themselvs the adventure company, but are far from it if they release titles like that.

The big opposition I get alot, is like the quote from dobbs...

Quote:

I hate getting stuck on puzzles. I play games to have constant fun. Most adventure games being so linear, all it takes is one puzzle I can't solve fairly quickly and my progress is halted. That is not fun. That's why I don't play adventure games any more.

I guess _my_ personal feeling is, getting stuck yet knowing there is a solution and finding that solution, feels like a great accomplishment. I was very happy when I found I had to give the pamphlet to the canibles to get the damn navigator head in MI1,

And when I realized that in order to get into atlantis I had to enter in the stone disk code upside down (contrary minds) in The Fate of Atlantis.

Sure, adventure games are hard work, but you know there is a way to solve them, and the challenge therein is to solve them, and the journey along the way is what makes it fun to finaly complete somthing.

Some people (alot it seems nowadays) dont have the patients to stick with an adventure game and solve the puzzles, our answer to these kinds of people is, 'fine, then our games are not for you' we wish to cater to people who love a good story, and love to unravel secrets resulting in rewards and at last victory. =)

So as far as I am concerned, Classic Adventure is not dead, the companies that have made them popular have simply lost thier way and have gone down a path of least resistance to the dollar bill.

We on the other hand, will always put the interests of the gamer first, even if it means losing money on our products.

For us it is about the love of the games, and the love to create them.

Thank you all for your input =)

You know what would be really cool? a Modable Adventure game, or adventure engine, think perhaps something like a SCUMM SDK, perhaps someone has already made it, I wonder if you could use the SCUMM VM to create your own SCUMM stories.

That sounded cool so I went to check it out, but on www.scummvm.org they say:
Quote:

While it is theoretically possible to write a new game that uses ScummVM it is not advisable. ScummVM has many hacks to support older games and no tools geared towards creating content usable by ScummVM.

but anyway, if it's game creation tools you need, there's a pretty thorough list here
/me bakes you all a pie.

Always without desire we must be found, If its deep mystery we would sound; But if desire always within us be, Its outer fringe is all that we shall see. - The Tao

It should be noted, i guess=)

that the MWShell, which is the executable that runs MW, is very modable, so those with some ambition, and the development tools (which we plan to release) could make some pretty cool mods,

the entire game is controlled via XML configuration file for characters and items and windows and such, and interaction is controlled via scripts with event handlers, the script which we officially call 'Flare Script' (since our game engine is Flare) is psuedo-C code and very easy to pick up and use.

so people with enough ambition could do some interesting things with it, probably beyond even what we thought was possible.

EDI I think you misunderstood me. I'm not in the "screw adventure games" crowd. I have nothing against puzzles. I like solving puzzles. What I don't like is when my progress halts because of one single bottleneck puzzle and all I can do is sit around twiddling my thumbs trying to think of the solution, particularly when the solution requires fairly non-intuitive thinking. It's at this point where my interaction with the game drops to zero and I have no fun. What I'd like to see for example is alternative puzzles. If puzzle A just doesn't "click" with me, can I try solving puzzle B instead to get me past the same point?

By all means go ahead and make the game you want. I'm just explaining a problem that in my experience has stopped a lot of people from playing adventure games who were otherwise fans.

Modable engine, that sounds quite cool, I wish you the best of luck!

Has anyone seen the new Leisure Suit Larry title thats comming up? the "vintage" ones were pretty good and funny, kind of like playing an episode of Seinfeld (yes I am aware Larry was made before Seinfeld).

I am not really sure what to expect from this new Larry, I don't see Al Lowe's name anywhere :(.
Oh hey that reminds me, everyone check out the demo of Myst IV. The game comes out Sept 28.

After all, one of the things that adventure games suffer from is not enough hype, so here it is, this is me generating hype. Myst IV, people.
If you want to play some old adventure games, I believe Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen are now under some sort of free license and they work with ScummVM.

I prefer Flight of the Amazon Queen of the two - It's funnier and you can't die :)

It could also have something to do with the fact that Adventure games have no way (or at least no one has come with the way) to become multiplayer games, how would it?

They have, and have had a way to be made as multiplayer versions since the days of the text adventure.

They were - and are - called MUDs. [smile]

If you want to see how well they are doing these days, check out sites like The MUD Connector.
