Why would a Shadowrunner become a corporate executive? It just doesn't make any sense. The whole point of shadowrunning is that you don't have to get a regular job. Anyway, about the rent, what if the character chooses a "street" lifestyle, do they still have to pay rent?
"Quality games for quality people." - Company Motto
Your right a shadowrunner could never become a corp exec, being SINless you could never get a real job. But what happens when you make too much money? You want power. This would be something for the GM's out there.

To start your own corp you would need to have a forged identity with a SIN, then you could transfer the money to this identity and become a buisness man if you wanted. You could then hire people to run your company(it would act like a computer controled company) and watch a steady flow of income come in or you could take a more hands on approach and decide where to buy your resources from, who to sell your products to and organizing different aspects of security.

Looking around for the best deals on the resources you need would be a time consuming task so you could give that task to one of your employees and he will carry it out to the best of his ability. Some people will be better at their jobs than others but to get the best staff you would need to pay them better. The work force would be an area of great competition between the corps as better staff increases productivity.

You (the shadowrunner) could then take on the role of a johnson (how many johnson's do you think are ex-shadowrunners?).
As a johnson you would try and get the edge on the competition through illegal means. For example you find out an Ares scientist has made alot of progress in a new weapons technology your company is pursuing, you could hire shadowrunners to kidnap him and steal his data, or you could use them as a decoy and get him yourself. You could always try and kill them instead of paying them. The scientist would be forced to work for you at gun point and your company's progress up the tech tree would be helped substantially. You would have to try and keep him secure(as Ares might want him back) because if you lost him and his data before he finished you would lose that progress.

You would not choose a life style at the start of the game, you would start at the very bottom and work your way up.

oops forgot to log in.
I guess you could live on the streets but you would have to pay protection money to the appropriate gang.
For 2,000 nuyen I'll hunt down your missing return key.
Thanks chummer but i found it, hope thats easier to read.
I might write down something about the user interface in the next few days if anyone is interested.

Thanks, it is. As far as the idea goes, I think it's what every single Shadowrun fan would love to see done right. Looking at Microsoft's record with the FASA properties, they've done a beautiful job. The Mechwarrior series was polished and fun, and I hear Crimson Skies is the same. Sadly, for unknown reasons, Microsoft would rather stick to those two games rather than open up the possibility of any sort of Shadowrun conversion.
Even if they did, I have to remain skeptical as to how well it'd come out. Either we'd see a complete abortion of a game, or it'd be something just set in the Shadowrun universe, with very little of the actual game and it's mechanics involved.

I agree. Though I would love to see a shadowrun CRPG of some sort. Either a one/multi-player game similar to baldur's gate...or maybe even an ambitious MMORPG...though I don't think technology is up to that point yet....
Ideas presented here are free. They are presented for the community to use how they see fit. All I ask is just a thanks if they should be used.
I'm going to make the Shadowrun game dammit! Boo Microsoft. I hope to have an alpha version around 2006. Hehe.

Is the "matrix"? Really copyrighted? The works of Gibson and Stephenson and games such as Cyberpunk and Shadowrun had the idea of the matrix long before the movies.

Shadowrun predates the movie "The Matrix." The concept of a computer network by that name is not copyright-able.

The major problem with the Shadowrun license has to do with the fallout of FASA Studios. Microsoft owns some part of the license, while the lore and PnP aspects are owned by a subsidiary of WizKids. I've heard that Infogrames also has a say somewhere in how the property is used. This creates a nasty mess of a license to navigate if you want to create a computer game using the world.

I've spoken with some people about using the Shadowrun license for an MMO and it has always been met with road blocks and people not sure if they could say yes to something. At anyrate, the license is in decline from a popularity standpoint so it could be had for a reasonable fee to the party that wants to take on the challenge of getting between 2 and 4 companies together to talk about the same subject for more than 2 minutes.

There's nothing more that I would like to see than a Shadowrun MMO done properly. Do it complete with the Astral Plane and the matrix using an adaption of the rules in the PnP version and wow, what a game it could be. I think there are enough fans of the PnP game to make for a very stable sales proposition as well but unfortunately the licensing arrangement is nothing short of a mess to navigate through. Once you see this, you realize that the license arrangement is the only reason why games in the Shadowrun universe have not been developed lately.
