With all of apples new advancements such as a decent machine (THE CUBE OR ANY G4/G3) And the introduction of the ATI Radeon, and NVIDIA (SOMETIME THIS YEAR), as well as 3dfx, and with apples support for opengl and usb joysticks, and a decent sound engine, does anyone here code on the mac platform? I recently purchased a top of the line system from apple and i''m quite pleased with its perfomance. It is not geforce level yet, but most shipping pc games and console games don''t fully take advantage of it anyway. My main question is, does anyone here that as far as a market to create games on , isn''t Apple ripe for the picking? I mean, think about it, decent 3d acceleration, and no ms windows, (os9 does not really screw with your machine while your game is running too much). The mac audience waits for cool shit to come out for it. It might even make sense to create old school games or decent 3d games for it and try to sell it online as all macs ship with Ethernet and modem ports. Whaddayahthink guys?

I program for Mac.

You bring up a few valid and interesting points that most people here won''t appriciate. But actually, with a Dual G4 with stock ATI Rage 128 produces higher framerates than a "Comparably equipped" PC which may have a GeForce(when running Q3 and UT at least). AltiVec is behind that.

I have been playing with the new OS ( OS X ) since its availability to ADC members. And just installed the Public Beta yesterday. It''s really nice. The API layers are wonderful. Alot of potential for playing games, and it''s also friendly to develop for (despite the lack of GameSprockets).

I think that if there was anytime to make games for the Mac, it would be now. But the problem still remains with expensive hardware.

if they weren''t so much more expensive than PC''s I would be all over macs. Up until 8th grade, I didn''t even know PCs existed!but alas I''m too poor for a mac (or at least a decent one, i''m sure i could afford an old one, but what''s the point then?)
oh well

(yeah, that had nothing to do with mac development, oh well I just hope this doesn''t turn into a flame war)

My tech team is all linux/open BSD nerds, which is why you never see them on GDNet. I''m a mutli-platform guy, I use whatever''s in front of me.

I''m very happy, because OSX will be a damn good system for games. It''s streamlined for open GL because the OS runs on it; this should be promising for mac games. Too bad Microsoft went and bought Bungie, or we would have seen some really great stuff.

I saw somebody playing StarCraft on a mac, so games are already out. And from what I hear, it''s an excellent platform. I think MacOS X will be something that will get the attention of developers worldwide.

Yeah, all of the new API''s are pretty kick-arse. John Carmack and omnigroup have already ported Q3 to OS X ( i think its still in beta tho)

I just hope that more games will eventually come this way. The G4 is such an amazing chip, it can do lots of neat things. But if apple really wants to shock the market, theyll have to lower their pricetags a bit...even tho i happily pay what they ask for now
