ETA: October 26,2000 Now only 1/2 of the consoles can be released by that date (NBC News). My guess is by now if you haven''t reserved one yet, your gonna have a tough time finding one before christmas.

I have alway wondered whether the PS2 is going to fring anyhting new to the table. Grpahics alone, it is great but im sure we all know that that isnt the big picture. I still dont see why great games cant be written for the PS.

Top reasons I''m getting the PS2 and not XBox, etc...
1) Over 50 games are planned to release on Oct 26
2) AC3 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound!!! My receiver has AC3, but never    got a chance to use it ... yet.
2) modem
3) Graphics
4) DVD-Rom Drive
5) Can still use my 20 PS games.

Top reason i''m not getting it until next year
1) no modem until spring to summer of 2001
2) $300 is too much. $200 is more reasonable

But interestingly enough, the MS and Nintendo''s console will launch around spring to summer of 2001 also, XBox leaning more toward fall of 2001. This''ll be fun.

Um, you''re mistaken. The PS2 does not have a modem.

Reasons why I should get XBox over PS2
========================================
1. XBox is at least twice as powerful in most areas, if not twice as powerful, it''s still much more powerful.

2. It''s easier for developers to make games on, thus, they''ll be able to focus on GAMEPLAY instead of graphics.

3. Metal Gear Solid for the XBox will be released later, hence it will most likely have better graphics and use the XBox''s technology a lot better than PS2, since PS2 is only half as powerful.

4. Already, over 150 developers have signed on to work on XBox games, including Acclaim, Activision, Atlus, Capcom, Dynamix, Eidos, Hasbro(unfortunately), Konami, Midway, Namco, Rage, Rockstar Games, Sierra, THQ, UBI Soft, as well as many many many others, but were unmentioned because of their rather low popularity mark.

5. Microsoft rarely screws up what they put good marketing and money into. Even if you ''anti-Microsoft'' people don''t like it, Microsoft is extremely successful. As will be the XBox.

Check the specs. XBox Ign has all the info you need to see.

I work in a games store over here in england, and I would just like to point out that getting a PS2 for christmas is a pain over here too. When customers were coming in to pre-order, we were saying they were garanteed one one release day, which at that time, they were. But now we have been told that even those people that pre-ordered at 7am on the first date no longer have this garantee. This, to me, is b***s***. Every one should by a DC and a DVD player for £300 and forget about PS2 (until the end of next year when MGS2 appears)

As much as i am looking forward to the PS2 i''m kind of hoping that it won''t do really well because it will make them work harder on the PS3

I love Game Design and it loves me back.

Do we really need another discussion on which system is more powerful? At this point all that power is just gonna increase the eye candy, it is not gonna make the plot/gameplay better. We''re talking millions of polygons a second!! Who care''s if one has 25 and another has 50? I like the games for the story and the fun of playing. The original Zelda rocked, and IMO I''m sure it will still be a better game than some of the ones for Xbox or PSX.
Just my thoughts.

There is not point to a better graphics or not. Sega Saturn have a good enginer and a some good games, but the market is very bad..
PSX2 have a good market pushed by a old psx. In opposite, PSX2 is very complicate to program (plus more franshine to Sony), so not mucht company will risk with psx2.
But MS have a good strategy market, and 150 company to made x-box games is very important, because you can hope 50 or more games in the next years. Games in x-box may have from bad to good quality, because the strategy of MS is have many games without count the quality. In opposite, MS is a new in the console market.

To my knowledge, the PS2 when launched in Japan, had a modem. People used the modem to hack or whatnot and Sony immediately dropped the modem from the PS2. I recently heard that PS2 will include the modem, but you will have to purchase it seperately for $50-$100 sometime around spring-summer of 2001.

With the rise of multi-player gaming, and AI not being too successful (i''ve yet to find AI that''s challenging as a human)...you need a modem on the console! If there''s no modem on the PS2, i''ll buy the XBox when it hits about $200. The main thing I hate about the XBox is that it uses the old x86 arch, and is bound by limits. The PS2 could out-perform the XBox CPU wise. (if you flame me on that, i''ll quote the site). But the XBox modelled their system to be better the the PS2 in every spec. One good thing goin for XBox is that I could make a game for it !

I heard that from a PS2 review on the web.
So there''s no way to play online gaming with the PS2?

There is not a modem that ships with the PS2..we pretty much have that one figured out...however early next year there is suppose to be one released by a 3rd party and somebody is obviously going to have to run the servers which you know they will charge money for..even if it is only 10 bucks a month or whatever I highly doubt it will be free.

At this point, it doesn''t matter what the PS2 comes with, how many and what games are going to appear on launch day. Due to the sheep nature of the main stream puplic, everyone wants one because every one else wants one. Where I work, people or more interested in the fact that the PS2 has a DVD player and not the games. They don''t seem to realise that they can get a stand alone DVD player for £150 that is as good or better. But it''s PS2, everyone will have one, so I mut have one too...

Ps. I will not be getting a PS2 on launch day

Actually, I''ve heard that the DVD in the PS2 is top-of-the-line.
PS2 aint hard to program for, PC''s are hard to program for, if you think about it. There is only one PS2, but there are thousands of different PC''s and you''re trying to make a game look pretty much the same on all of them. I suppose DX or OGL would make this possible, but you gotta hope the player has it installed.

Yup, the PS2 can play DVD''s as well as most other DVD-players on the market. This is one of the reasons people buy a PS2. I even saw an ad of a shop selling DVD''s, saying ''can also be played on a PS2''.

And um, PS2 is pretty damn hard to program for. Not that *real* programmers would care about that...it just takes more time to develop a game.

And I agree with Arsenius, lets stop console wars. One console may have better specs than another console, that doesn''t mean the latter can''t have good games. I mean, my PC is way better than my PS, but I play less games on it. AFAIK, all next-gen consoles will have great games.

Now let''s get back on topic again.
Okay, Sony''s said that they will only ship 500.000 consoles at launch, but they will also (try to) ship 100.000 consoles per week after that. Most people will be able to get a PS2 before christmas, they just have to wait a little longer. And you bloody yanks shouldn''t be complaining, in Europe we have to pay about $420 for the PS2. Compared to a normal DVD-player it''s not that expensive (a decent DVD-player costs about $300 where I live). So buying a PS2 is not such a bad deal...

I personally think that Sony is greating a bigger deman that it actually needs so that it can keep the price artifically high. What I mean is that over here in England, a friend of mine was the third person in a store to order a PS2 (He works there, so he ordered it before 7.30, which is when sony were alowing us to take pre-orders). This, you may think, would garentee him one. Oh no. He was the pround receiver of a letter that stated "Rest assured that a PS2 is reserved for you, but we cannot garentee when you will get delivery". Doesn''t this sound like the relase date is being pushed back, or that they want to create an artifical panic bying for the machine, as it hasn''t been as big as they had hoped?
