I think OpenGL is great as is! It may be a pain to download the extensions ect ect but it''s worth is. And it''s supported on alot of platforms. Anyway. About a year ago or more there was talks about a project called farenheight. This was to be a joint project between Microsoft and SGI. Then there was rumors about it not going smoothly because microsoft was to busy pouring everything it had into DX. Then they said It was back on track. And now I''ve lost track of it all. Anyone heard any new son this???? I think I''ll go check it out over at opengl.org.
Ok I just checked it out! It seems that the fahrenheit project is still on scheduale. Even though the guy that is announcing it sounds like he is kissing MS butt.
If you don''t know what the fahrenheit project is then heres a clip from opengl.org
Fahrenheit will incorporate Microsoft Direct3D & DirectDraw APIs with SGI''s OpenGL, OpenGL Scene Graph & OpenGL Optimizer.
The Fahrenheit architecture will consist of 3 levels:
1) a low-level programming interface that combines DirectX and OpenGL
2) a middle interface based on SGI''s Scene Graph technology
3) a high-end set of extensions based on SGI''s OpenGL Optimizer API and DirectModel API from HP and Microsoft.
Also here is a little article about it''s current state

What I''d like to know is when a 1.2 implementation for Windows will be available. To me, that seems more critical than a new specification.
I also have to say, after talking to the 3D architect for DirectX over the weekend, with the release of DirectX 8, it''s going to be harder to justify developing a high-end 3D game using OpenGL. The additions they are making are much more impressive than they sound on paper.
