Ok I am 14 and I have only 3/4 years programming in C++.My life revolves around getting a game development job! I have wanted to make those games ever since I got my first system the SNES Oh wow I thought, wouldn''t it be awesome to make these games! Anyhow ever since then I have had my heart set on the industry! Now as I start my Freshmen year in Highschool and I''m learning more and more how games are actually made I get to thinking... "Hmm am I really gonna be able to do this?" I have a 3.7 GPA but only cause time that could be spent on homework is spent On games etc. = ) I really wonder though will anyone actually hire me? I can''t make any games! I mean yeah I''m 14 but I will be out of Highschool in a few years and I plan to attend the Digipen school and after that? I don''t know if I will be ready! I really really want to make games so much I have read 400 pages in my C++ book in 3 weeks trying to sap up every bit! What do you guys think? I kinda came here like a counseling thing because you guys are like Titans making games and Programming! So I thought you might be able to sooth my troubled soul! Thanks a bunch!

Your 14 and leaving highschool in a few year''s ?
Why not finish year 12 atleast, that way you have something to fall back on if game developing doesn''t work out.

Also At the current state no one will hire you professionally for several reason''s, you''re under age, you need experience, need something to proove you have experience and you need to have a pasion for the industry and shit loads of other reason''s.

I would suggest making a couple of basic demo game''s and then maybe if your good enough get a team together and see how well that goes.

Also there''s several area''s of Game Development make sure you find which one you suit best.

i heard in digipen all they do is teach you stuff out of a lamothe book? (=fairly easy stuff)

so i woudn''t be too worried if i were you

just get a firm knowledge of C++, and maybe some windows and directx programming, and you''ll be set

They''ve gotta do more than teach out of a LaMothe book at Digipen, hehe. I know someone who goes to school out there and he says it''s very, very tough. But hey, if you get into Digipen, you''re practically guaranteed a job in the industry. Hell, a lot of people don''t graduate simply because someone hired them before they had a chance to.

Oh, and maketty... don''t worry about it man! You''ve got a lot of time left! A lot of people don''t start programming at all until they''re 3-4 years older than you, or more. When you really get into it, you''d be surprised how much you can learn in just a summer...

Im afriad that nothing will prepare you for everything that you will come across as you jump into game development. You can learn all the crap that you want to but hey, there will always be things that you will not know. that is ok. preperation is determined mainly on your perception of readiness. It based more on you ability to say " Hey, im good enough to do this" and you go do it. jobs are not given out. you will have to work for them. Although most jobs will ask that you fill certain criteria but other will simply want you to be knowllegable and open to impressionability.
Finish school first. You should really put the game dev on hold untill you get out of grade 12. there is nothing wrong with doing something as a hobby in school. but then again you dont want to fail your important things because they will help you later on.
I recently spoke with one of the people in one of my classes about a similar subject.
one of his statements was as follows;
"why the hell do i need to know english to get into programming? im not going to be writing poetry and crap assed stories."

my reply was less than censored but i think you would get the idea eh.
good luck in your studies and remmember that you will never stop learning and that what you learn in one project may not nessisarily help you in another. keep your mind open to everything
