I am just start up on a small project at work where I need to create 3D text from a TrueType font. I think I will create each letter as it''s own 3D object. I am using Direct3D as my rendering pipeline (I''m using DirectShow so this is not negotiable). I just wanted to get some of your ideas and experiences about the best way to create 3D text from a TrueType font (any URLs for programs that have this implemented would be great). The real task is deciding how to create the outline of the letter and then it''s a simple modification of the z component of the vertices and I will have 3D letters. That "deciding how to create the outline" is the part I am thinking about now. I would greatly appreciate any ideas! Thanks! Todd

I would check out the TrueType font specification... I found it at www.wotsit.org - search for "True". I may be wrong, but I think TrueType fonts describe their characters as a set of vectors. If I am right, then you may be able to do something with that.

DX8 has functions to make 3D models out of TrueType text.
And in OpenGL there''s a library that does just that... not sure how it''s called.

Thanks for the replies. I''m going to do it manually since I do not have access to DirectX 8 right now. Thanks BrianH for the great tip on the TTF file format. I already see in the documenation how I can do what I need to do and just have to find it in the file now! Thanks again.
