My story is kinda the same as caffineaddict's. I'm pretty new to programming and am starting with C/C++. The biggest difference for me is that I'm 21 and feel like I'm starting a little late. I've got a ton of books (the "Dummies" series is great), my very own copy of MS Visual C++ Standard Ed., and an intense need to make games. Right now, I feel kind of overwhelmed trying to figure everything out in C/C++, and the strange thing is I love it. One of the responses to caffine's post hit it on the head, "I will guarantee you that if there is anything in your soul that wants to program, you will be hooked." I'm there, but I'd appreciate any advice I can get. HELP ME, PLEASE!!! Edited by - Jiggold on 9/29/00 12:02:41 PM Edited by - Jiggold on 9/29/00 4:05:25 PM

1. Read and try to understand EVERYTHING in the book.
2. Whenever something seems hardest, you''re probably on the edge of a breakthrough.
3. C++ may seem hard to learn, but once you do learn it, it seems so cool.

That''s all for now. Good luck!

Well, I was the author of that quote (glad you liked it). Here''s another one that I''ve used before and try to keep in mind: Learning game programming is like building a jigsaw puzzle without a picture to work from. About the best you can hope for at first is to find two border pieces that fit together. But the good news is, all the pieces are there if you keep working at it.

If it makes you feel any better, I''m a newbie to Game Programming too (though not programming in general), and you''ve got 30 years on me.

Make good use of them.

Hi.
I''m also a newbie. i''m also 21 and i''ve just started university and am learing c++. i''m not finding it hard....yet. I''ve looked ahead and i see some complicated stuff but i''m confident i''ll understand it when we come round to it. The book i recommend to any begginer is ''Essence of Programming using c++'' by Douglas Bell. It''s not very complete but it''s REALLY easy to understand and i have found it to be a great help. When i graduate in 4 years time, i want to eventually get into the gameing industry, just like most of us here. i know the feeling of, being ''too old'' to start, but i always tell my self to be motivated and stay focused. i have found alot of sites on the internet about games programming and i don''t understand them much right now, but when i do get to that level, i''m sure i''ll use the resources fully.
best of luck!
Dong
