Limits on Vertex Array Size

Hi Guys, My program puts model data into a vertex array and then draws the model using a glDrawArrays call. This seems to work just fine on almost all the systems I have tested on, however on one system it crashes. On this particular system if I put more than ~4000 vertices into an array and then draw it it crashes! This system is running redhat linux with an ATI 9200 card. On all other systems it works fine with any number of vertices. Even on the same system running windows! Strangely enough if I compile the glDrawArrays call into a display list first then it works fine on this system as well. However I heard this may slow things down and I really want dynamic arrays. Does anyone know if there a limit on the size of vertex arrays?

There are index limits on DMA'd arrays, but other than that, as far as I'm aware, there aren't any limits. What error were you getting on the crash?
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

Sorry what are DMA'd arrays?

The error I get is basically a segmentation fault. Looking at the stack trace it is just full of calls to s8584 in module fglrx.

I have also now tried compiling up nehe tutorial 45 and running this without VBOs turned on. This also terminates with a segmentation fault in the same area. So it looks like it is probably not my code at fault.

Looks like I am going to have to break my arrays into smaller ones if I want it to work on this system!

There might be a driver problem since it works on same machine under windows. Did you try installing new drivers?
You should never let your fears become the boundaries of your dreams.

Yes I tried the latest drivers from ATI.
I have also filled in a bug report on the ATI site.

Looks like I will need to use them in display lists and/or cut them down in size.

Yeah, sounds much like a driver bug to me, especially since it works in windows and not linux. ATI's linux drivers (from what I've heard) aren't the best around...
