I have a problem. I don't know how or why, but while there are no history urls in my history folder or anything, and when i try to view them from Internet Explorer there aren't any. I cleared them. No history adresses. But when i try to clean them with Norton System Works 2003, it says that there are 10 history adresses ( urls ) ( although it shouldn't find any ) that it can't clear. The problem is that i can't find them in my computer! What could that problem be? By the way, i didn't do any nauthy activity.

Are you trying to cover up your porn habits? Don't get me wrong, but you sound like a scary little kid that's afraid of being caught by mommy or daddy for visiting pr0n sites.

If IE shows the history is empty, it's not likely someone will cleverly cast a spell to show the 10 hidden thingies.

Also, you do sound a little paranoid, since you also wanted to know all about these 2 GDNet tracking cookies...

I knew someone would say that. But it's not true! Really. I am not that stupid.

The news. There aren't any spyware on my computer according to Adaware, and there are no virus according to Norton Antivirus 2003. But look at this. While i was in the internet and i was searching for something, norton tells me the Notepad has changed and it was affected by a virus or something, but i accidentaly clicked enter and missed some details.

what's the problem with notepad now. All the .txt files have the icon of Notepad, but Notepad, the pogram, doesn't have that icon and it has the default icon of an .exe. When i double click a .txt, or right click on it and say open with... notepad, it doesn't opem. But when i open Notepad, the program, it works ok.

And if i use another account ( i am on XP ), there isn't this problem with Notepad!

So what am i going to do with Notepad and the misterious urls that don't exist?

thanks

Latest news.
1. I was wrong. It seems that the other user accounts do have that problem with Notepad.

Do you think uninstalling it installing it again would be a good idea? If yes, how?

2. The urls problem doesn't appear in other accounts so i guess it will be easy to remove. Any ideas (on where i should search for the urls for example )?

Thanks

About 2.

In "C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Local Settings\History" there is nothing except the urls of the sites i just visited. Same thing for cookies.

Hey guys don't let this thread die...

OK;
I can only help with one thing. Icons that still have the icon of notepad; they don't. The icon for notepad is a blue notebook. The icon for the text files is a little white notebook. That icon is coming from (IIRC) shell32.dll, not notepad.exe
Sorry I can't be of much use;
What you could always do is to take your WindowsXP CD and copy back notepad.exe from that. There is a tool on the install CD, in the i386 folder, that allows you to extract a single file from an archive (or "notepad.ex_"). Again, this is all a guess as I don't have access to an XP CD. Just do a search for ".exe" in the i386 folder, find the extract-file tool, then use it on notepad.ex_ (if it exists... have a hunt)

Hunting around Win2K, there's a utility called "EXPAND" in the WINNT\SYSTEM32 folder (WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 on XP), this might be the tool I'm thinking of...

Yiap that did the trick! Thanks. I searched google and all i had to do was to put in the CD for XP and then do:

>d:
>cd i386
>expand notepad.ex_ C:\windows\notepad.exe
>expand notepad.ex_ C:\windows\system32\notepad.exe

Ok now it's ok :) Thank you benryves :)

But i have a question. Why all the .exes are .ex_s in the CD?

I forgot to say that it appears i got a trojan that infected my notepad. How can i know if i got rid of that trojan? Does Norton detects it( i think yes, but if it has cleared it then why my notepad didn't work? or did the trojan harm my Notpad permanenty)?

Thanks... and any ideas about the urls?

Just suck it up and use FireFox. So much nicer for history management.

Yeah, everyone knows that FireFox is the best browser for looking at porn.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

......Anybody knows anything about the trojan thing?

They're compressed, and the ??_ style extension is so you don't try to use the compressed ones. That's why you cannot just rename them and expect them to work.

oK thank you but what about that trojan? Does Norton detect it( i think yes, but if it has cleared it then why my notepad didn't work? or did the trojan harm my Notpad permanenty)?

And where can i search for those 10 urls? Where does Norton search to find my history urls?

thanks

That's what we all said when we were in puberty...

And if you got so much problems with a trojan, why not have someone fix it? You should do a little research first on what tools are avaliable on this topic because you seem to run directly to the boards to ask around.

Search for MacAfee's Stinger utility. It removes a bunch of recent/hot viruses and trojans. And no, we don't nothing anything about this trojan, because we aren't physhic.

I know i can't persuade you but anyways. I was searching for something that will unlock the tracks in Need For Speed 5 Porche Edition, because right now i can only run in 3 tracks and i don't know what i should do to be able to run in more. And searching for something like this, whether you want it or not, will bring some evil results. It seems i got the trojan from a "innocent" site. But anyway the point of my thread is not this, that was just a history note.
But even if i was searching for porn ( *which clearly isn't the case* ) what's your problem? If you can't help then leave my private issues alone.

Anyway, i'll see if i can get McAffe Stringer.

But right now the problem is not the trojan, it's only the 10 history urls that nobody can see except Norton.

I downloaded McAfee Stringer and it didn't report any viruses or trojans.

Who cares about those 10 URLs nobody can see except some buggy application? If you can't see if with your eyes, forget about it.

Otherwise, reinstall windows
