Wow, I have to say that this is one fast distro. Easy to install as well, and all in one .ISO. So far, I love it, I've had [very] minimal problems as of yet, and it set up my sound, broadband, and what have you without a hitch. It's very fast, like I said, optimized for i686 and above. Anyone else use YOS? It's indeed an excellent distro so far. I'm using 2.1.0-4 I believe (latest stable). Again, very nice.

Linux got on my nerves. Working extra++ hard to do something in Linux irks me. Back to Windows it was for me, and I must say that one doesn't know what ease-of-use really means unless they've been the hell (Linux) and back.

I switch to Linux whenever Windows really gets on my nerves and I switch to Windows whenever Linux really gets on my nerves. Both happen every few months. Luckily I use SharpDevelop and MonoDevelop so it's no hassle to switch, I just set a different default in Grub.

Where did you get YOS Linux? I did a Google search and found the webpage for it but it's down.

Nothing is gonna be as fast as Gentoo Stage1 installation. It is a single CD as well but you need internet connection and compiling everything with my anal oprimizations (I'll post them when I boot to Linux later, to do my daily emerge-webrsync) took a few days on my overclocked P4.

btw, Linux is very easy to use, when you get used to it. MUCH more powerful than Windows. Only lacks a good VS style IDE..

Alright I promised to post my kick ass optimizations so here you go:
"-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -msse -msse2 -ffast-math -mfpmath=sse,387 -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -fexpensive-optimizations -fforce-addr -fprefetch-loop-arrays -falign-functions=4 -foptimize-register-move"

There are only 2 things that I don't find easy to use about linux now:

1. Installing nvidia drivers, which varies from simple to extremely complicated depending on the distro.

2. Any changes/new files to my flash drive won't commit unless I unmount.

I just installed the new SimplyMepis and it's become a very mature product since the last one I installed (beta 05).

This looks intriguing; there's a positive review of YOS here. I downloaded the ISO, but now I need to partition my drive... there's no way to do this without destroying the current data, is there?

Well, I have to say, it's very nice. Comes with gcc 3.4.1, latest of everything really.

No Gnome, but I think you can install it afterwards.

All in all, I'm damn impressed.

Few issues with XMMS and KDE's system notification sounds (maximize, minimize - but I just disabled those, now all is peachy).

Again, very nice.

Although they have some issues putting it across multiple hard drives (it's possible, but cumbersome) so I just used one of my spare 20 gigs (Western Digital, still runs great).

Hurray for Yoper!

you have to backup first.
You can re-partition it without deleting all data. There should be a tool(probably partedit+gui) on installation disk. IIRC, you must to set your disc mode in bios to LBA before doing anything.

Yah, it comes with QT-Parted on the disk as well as fdisk and cfdisk (or atleast I assume it comes with cfdisk).

QT-Parted is pretty nice, I think.

I love how it automagically set up my broadband. w00t.

I'm running i386 Slackware in a window on my Powerbook thanks to qemu. What's YOS use for a package system, rpm, or is it Debian-based?

It uses apt-get - the Slackware version (slapt-get, unofficial).

we use linux at work but i thought about maybe going dual boot at home.. how is linux coming along in the gaming sector? -- of course minus doom 3, UT2xxx and any blizzard game? what about wireless cards/cable modems/wireless printers, or wirless anything coming off of a LAN in my house? what about DVD compatibility? im not trying to flame, these are the serious questions that i need to know the answer to before i get a machine completely dedicated to linux or maybe have a dual boot. i think video card driver issues are a given. like i said we have linux at work and i like it.. but we dont have to worry about any of these issues.

Interesting. I have ADSL modem on USB.(damn, i hate this modem(D-Link DSL-200) alot, but it's the only one i can get) I spent many hours on making it work in linux, without any success (i have suse personal with replaced kernel and all developer stuff installed. I recompiled kernel to make it work...). Maybe YOS can do it... will try if my next attempt to make it work fails.

Heh, making sure my 10mbit Ethernet connection works is as much as ticking a switch in the kernel.

I'll give it a try. The only reason I never used linux in the past is that I don't know how to recompile the kernel to install the Nvidia drivers. Can anyone walk me through how this is done? I know where to get the drivers from, and I am ok with out the GUI (I think it has to be done with out X windows running).

-march=pentium4

Would it be faster if it was -mcpu=pentium4 instead of a march flag?

No.
