Anyone who uses Gentoo post your CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf. Mine: "-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -msse -msse2 -ffast-math -mfpmath=sse,387 -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -fexpensive-optimizations -fforce-addr -fprefetch-loop-arrays -falign-functions=4 -foptimize-register-move"

U going all out for performance over size there huh ;-)
Anything posted is personal opinion which does not in anyway reflect or represent my employer. Any code and opinion is expressed “as is” and used at your own risk – it does not constitute a legal relationship of any kind.

Yep.

Mine are pretty basic and may be the default.

Nothing new. All those are so basic.

CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"

Really basic. I would be running a 64 bit version except for no ATI driver support. Remind me to buy a nVidia card next time I upgrade...

Ugh. You are why Gentoo has a bad wrap.

Most of those options aren't doing anything.

-mmmx, -msse, -msse2: Selecting a Pentium 4 processor implies these.

-frerun-cse-after-loop, -frerun-loop-opt, -fexpensive-optimizations, -falign-functions, -foptimize-register-move: Already enabled by -O3.

-ffast-math - I don't recommend this. It might be useful for most programs, but assuming it will be okay with all your programs probably isn't a good idea.

Fruny has the right idea.
Chess is played by three people. Two people play the game; the third provides moral support for the pawns. The object of the game is to kill your opponent by flinging captured pieces at his head. Since the only piece that can be killed is a pawn, the two armies agree to meet in a pawn-infested area (or even a pawn shop) and kill as many pawns as possible in the crossfire. If the game goes on for an hour, one player may legally attempt to gouge out the other

I wish I could find the source, but it's one of the Gentoo devs:

"-ffast-math: If I want my math done wrong, I'll ask my cat."

CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"

Basic, simple, stable, and fast. The new SSA stuff in gcc 3.5 will do far more for optimization (full vectorizing like icc, f.e) than any existing compiler flags.

I used to use -O3, but it adds very little to speed and a lot to the compile time. So, not worth it. The packages that really need optimization (mplayer, Firefox, OpenOffice, glibc, gcc) are so brittle that the ebuilds strip most of the CFLAGS. Even KDE suffers from this to some extent.

lol

I didn't have any problems with -ffast-math so far. I've compiled X, Gnome and KDE without problems, plus all the smaller programs I use.

This one struck me as particularly funny:

"I essentially started using Gentoo because my ....ing KDE clock would never show the right time in Red Hat."
