From the GameDev.net main page if you look in the upper left
header there is "new? BEGIN here" it is a complete section
of everything you could want including some excellent articles
that address precisely your question.
I''m fairly new myself(though I do unrelated comp stuff at my day job) But I''m learning C my "first" game(meaning completed project) will be tic-tac-toe.(from scratch) Don''t laugh its going to be one or
2 player and its going to look slick, all the finishing touches and whatnot.
I hope you also get some positive feedback to your question here on the message board. now back to tech support...

Hmmm... it was a Hello World type of program but it printed out:

"My fart smells better than yours."

Uh... pretend I never said anything.

It was a password program in a DOS batch file... very very crude. It would take the input, compare it to the password, and send you to an appropriate directory (a sort of login, if you will). I was 9, it was on a Victor PCII, using the DOS command line.

Mine was an extremely frustrating text adventure/quiz game that I made with my best friend and my brother in QBASIC ("Bomby!"). The funny thing was that our design kept changing mid project, but we never rewrote anything. It started off as a quiz game, then it grew into finding "credit cards" (don''t ask ), then it grew into a full out text adventure. All in one cryptic unexplainable jumble of spaghetti code! Plus, we made the strangest variable names and comments (Once again, don''t ask ). Also, the most annoying aspect of the game was that if you got one question wrong, the entire game restarted. It became frustrating for even US to play .

What am I getting at? I''m not sure myself. I suppose what I''m trying to say is this: have fun with your first project and don''t worry about the result too much. Besides, you can always upload it somewhere and make some hapless victims test it out. I think we have about 3000 people on AOL who want to kill us now (yep, that was the download count).

My first program was ''hello world'', my first graphics program was a ball bouncing around on the screen, and my first "game" was a catapult game. It had a catapult on the left of the screen and a castle on the right. Everytime you started the castle would be in a different location. Then you had to specify the angle you wanted to fire at the castle with. You got like 10 shots and it took four hits to destroy the castle. I wrote it in c64 BASIC. It was really fun to make and I haven''t stopped makinf games since then. =)

Ah well...my first game was a flight simulator.
*waits for gasps of amazement*
Actually, i should come clean on this - it was a text based flight simulator(!) where you typed in the heading and the altitude and occasioanly you got blown off course by the wind a bit. Not *so* exciting, but i enjoyed it at the time ;-)

Robhog: You just gave me an interesting idea (no, not a text based flight sim... something else)

My first game was made with DHTML. There was a big 8 tentacled alien on the left of the screen and you ship on the right. You had missles and laser. You could shoot at the alien, and you would get points, but the alien would not die. You had to click on screen buttons to get the ship to move or fire. I have long since deleted it. After a while of playing it, it would make you computer crash and issue a blue screen of death.
My first succesfull game was a deer hunter game that would randomly generate trees for scenery and place them on a background. You can check it out on this website The Spyder''s Web. I also made an RPG tiling engine in DHTML, that is also on the website, but you have to save it before you can play it.
My first C game I''m still working on. It''s a roguelike. It''s coming along quite well. If anyone wants to check it out (which you probably don''t), just email me.
