I've got two two computers hooked up right now to a router. My desktop runs the internet perfectly. Now I just hooked up my laptop, took a cable, connected it to my router and to my laptop. Now it shows the connection on my laptop, but its not retrieving an IP adress for my Net Adapter Connection. How can the connection work for one computer, but not the other? What kind of steps can I take to ensure that the software side of my laptop is set it properly. I'm running XP Pro, and I don't wanna hear anything about Linux ;). Main problem is, its sending packets but not recieving them. [Edited by - Orb on October 11, 2004 6:46:00 PM]

just to clear it up, the laptop is connected to the router, or the desktop?
Everything is better with Metal.

directly into the router.

*bump with more info

My Local Area Connection is enabled and returns my IP Adress in the status thing.

My 1394 (adapter) connection to the internet however, is enabled and firewalled, but is not returning the IP addresses. It shows "Unavailable" there instead.

any help is greatly appreciated as my internet is very important to me. :)

Probably already did this, but: open up your Local Area Connection, goto properties, and select the item TCP/IP in the combo box and goto properties for that, make sure "check for ip address automatically is checked". If nothing else this was a bump.
