My brain currently hurts, i've been trying to work this out for ages and meh, i cant which is annoying. The basic problem is thusly; My granddad used to wander around the place with a video camera recording things, place, events and the family, as such he has a fair amount of footage on tape. Now, tape degrades after a while so my dad has come up with a great idea of burning them all to DVD, thus saving the lot. The only problem is, its a bit of a slow process to do it all, 30mins of DVD took over 4hours to encode, so muggins here has been tasked with finding a better system to encode 'em with. Currently he has an AthlonXP2.2Ghz iirc (certainly no faster), 1Gig DDR ram and IDE harddrives of various sizes. Now, based on what I've heard thus far I thought P4s were the best for this kind of thing, however someone has thrown the old AMD64 spanner into the works and frankly, after about 2hours of looking at stuff I'm none the wisers as to which to go for. Note: The software he has is only 32bit (ofcourse) so wont take advantage of any spinky 64bit-ness to make things go faster. So, what do you all knowning people recommend going with? And try to keep the prices sane [wink]

What software is being used? And what resolution is the VHS being captured in? 512x348 captured video encoded in "extended play" type quality (one single layer DVD holds 180 minutes, good for VHS quality video since there is no visible loss) can be encoded in realtime on my Athlon 2800+ using TMPEGEnc (MPEG2 stream is then tranfered to TMPEGEnc DVD Author where it is packages into chapters and menus in a few minutes, then burned to a DVD). Full resolution (720x480) high bitrate content encodes at about %50 of realtime.

Either the software/video source is extremely slow, or there is something wrong with the computer for it to go that slow.

hmmm I honestly dont know what software (some comerical program which came with a dongle of sorts to allow the video player to connect to the computer) or settings he is using, he kinda dumpped this on me then went off to bed, however based on what you've said it does seem a tad wrong.

I bother 'im about the details tomorrow then, cheers for that
