The Grudge

Original Post
I just got back from seeing The Grudge with a group of friends and oh my frickin' god, this is one of the creepiest movie I have ever seen. The sad thing is about this film is that you see EVERYTHING before it happens, but you still jump. I mean, this movie uses so many cliches in the writing, but it is incredibly well done. There's this scene where Sarah Michelle Gellar's character is riding on the bus glancing out the window and you just know that she's going to see the ghost... and when she does you still frickin' jump. I'm not going to go into any details on the plot of the movie because I don't want to spoil it for anyone who wants to see it, but this movies is nothing like Scream or I Know What You Did Last Summer. This is a genuine horror film. If you're a fan of horror or just plain want to be made to jump over and over again, go to the theaters and watch this movie. Now. For those who are unaware (as if there are all that many people) this is an American remake of the first film of the Japanese series Ju-on. I was produced by Sam Raimi with an American production crew and American lead actors, but with the original Japanese Director, some good Japanese actors, and a Japanese set crew. It takes some of the best of both worlds and mixes them quite well. [Edited by - zer0wolf on October 23, 2004 2:27:28 AM]
Sounds cool, I'm not really one for horror movies so I'll probably not see it.
Americans should remake Battle Royale!!!!!

Haha, lame ass americans remaking movies for $$$!
btw Ju-on was a good movie, but in no way did compare to the Ring.
Whats funny is how much people complain that not enough Japanese stuff comes ashore, and then when something does, theres people bitching about how they only did it for money.

Yer well I don't know about America, but (the original) Ring, Ring 2, Ring 0, Ju-on, etc were all available here (australia) before Hollywood started remaking them. It seems Hollywood just grabs the old movie, adds some $$$ for special effects and tonnes of advertising, then sends it off to be consumed.
And, whats worse, they often miss the qualities that made the original movie so good.
Take 'The Ring' for example, the original is a fantastic movie and very unnerving (and scary). It seems as though the directors of the Hollywood one said, woah, lets take these events (the video, the well, the girl coming out of the tv, the ppl dying with ghastly expressions) and whack them together to make a movie....
*flame away*

They were available here as well. Grabbing an old movie, adding special effects, and sending it off to be consumed is well, good business.

Except the Grudge was directed by the original director...
I haven't seen the origionals yet, so I can't make comparisions. I don't know about The Ring, but The Grudge was directed by it's origional director and writer, Takashi Shimizu. Also one of the producers is Takashige Ichise who has been involved with Ringu and Ju-On. Does that make it better? No, but what it has done is allowed these people to bring there product to a new audience, and the sad fact is that most Americans going to sit through a subtitled or badly dubbed foreign film. The sad fact is most American theatres aren't going to show a majority of foreign films, good or not. For me, who will sit through a foreign film, I have been introduced to a whole series of films to watch, and that's good. So, yeah, I'm not really sure where I was going with this but I'll leave it at this. While the origionals may or may not have been better they don't stand a chance of having any impact in American cinema, and these remakes are good because they do and are able to introduce another world of cinema to those who care. So yeah, enough said.
Speaking of which, I saw the trailer for White Noise which creeped me out. Must have been because technology was involed or something. /shrug

The White Noise trailer was pretty creepy. Despite watching it with a friend in broad daylight, we both emitted a resonating "whoa.."
The Grudge doesn't look appealing at all. The whole little ghost child schtick has really really been done to death (pun intended). These days, shocks and jumps don't scare me. Unsettingly slow tension-builders do.
I saw it. I'm prolly about to throw some spoilers at you so turn away if you're scared.
Here's what I think happened during the planning of this movie.
"omg lets make a movie with a bunch of crazy stuff happens and lots of jump scenes with loud noises to freak the audience out!"
"AWESOME!"
*writes the first few scenes*
"omg you know what'd be awesome is if we went back in time without telling the audience to confuse them and freak them out some more!"
"OMFG YES!"
*writes some more*
"Hey, you see The Ring? That was some freaky shit! Lets do some of that!"
"OH YES OH YES OHHHH YESS!"
*write write write*
some guy from the back: "um, you know, we kinda need some sort of plot to pull this stuff together."
"omg but we've got 2/3 of the movie written already!"
"that's okay, just wedge something in there about some murders and angry ghosts"
"but what about the jump scenes?!"
"hmm... how about we put this final scene where that Buffy chick tries to burn the house down!"
"OMG YES! And then when she thinks she's about to see her boyfriends body she doesn't and we have ANOTHER JUMP SCENE WITH LOUD SOUNDS!"
"OOHHH OOOHHH OHHHH AAHHAHHHOOOOHHH.... ahhh..."
OK, maybe it wasn't that bad. The first part of the movie was actually pretty good and the freakiest part of the movie. But then it's just more of the same. More cliche jump scenes. Woah! You saw the ghost! Woah! You saw it again! Woah! Again! About the last 30 minutes of the movie you're wondering if they're going to explain any of the time jumps, what Bill Pullman has to do with any of this, why the mom was so freaky and where she disappeared to, why for three years the mom had been living by herself and it took that long (since they never mentioned anyone else) for Koko to get killed but then once it starts the ghosts go nuts and kill everyone.
If you need a movie to take your girlfriend to so she clings to you for dear life then this is the movie.

I'm conflicted on that movie. On the one had, I want to see Michael Keaton do more films. On the other hand, that movie looks like complete crap. But maybe its just the shitty preview I've been seeing, where they show all the 'recordings' and tell you who's supposedly speaking, and when they died. That's just dumb.

I've seen Ju-on 2 and am probably going to see Ju-on this weekend so that I'll have seen the original before the remake.
But yes, see Ju-on 2. Excellent movie.

..., why for three years the mom had been living by herself...
She wasn't there by herself for three years, it was more like a couple of days, if that. Everything that happened to Yoko and Karen and the lot started happening the day the Williams moved into the house. So, I guess she wasn't alone for more than a day.

I don't know if you were implying that they didn't explain that one or not, but they did.

This is one of 4 movies out / soon to be coming out that shares a title with a Tool song.
Exactly what I was thinking of when I read the thread title.
wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. ultimatum prison cell.
Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. hang on or be humbled again.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. ignorant to the damage done.
Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.
Wear the grudge like a crown. desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. and we're sinking deeper.
Defining, confining, sinking deeper. controlling, defining, and we're sinking
Deeper.
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.
Saturn comes back around. lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.
Give away the stone. let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated
Anchor.
Give away the stone. let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges
Into gold.
Let go.
