I know we get more than enough link error bitching as it is, but I've never seen anything like this before...

Riiight. So, I have no idea what's going on, basically. I just have no bloody idea what's going on.

If what I think happened happened then you can fix it by going to Configuration Properties | C/C++ | Code Generation and next to Buffer Security Check put: No.

msdn has a rather depressing list of all the things that error code LNK2001 could pertain to. furthermore, msdn also an interesting explanation on what __security_cookie is for.

Have you recently upgraded your DirectX SDK?

VC6 needs a replacement LIB file, which you can get from Microsofts site. It should be in the 'Extras' package.
