OMG, about four months ago, I applied for a job for J2ME Mobile games development. TODAY I got a reply that they would like to meet me in person. Thygrrr might get a game developer job in the "industry" This is like Christmas and Easter on Halloween.

Ok Ok, remain calm. Congratulations, but be prepared. This sounds like an interview.

Yeah, it's kind of an interview. All I really need to do is freshen up on my J2ME skills - I have time till next thursday, lets see :)

Since I have some work experience as a coder (4 years as total), it shouldn't be too hard. I'm kind of good at talking to people to mnake myself look good once they listen to me!

Problem being - I don't have one. But I have one week to catch up on that. Whee! Actually, I really need to hurry to get that Job "certificate" from my former employer now. And I have to write that myself, send it there, get it signed. Argh. Tomorrow morning will be busy!

They asked to talk to you without a portfolio of any type?

Not sure what to think of that :D

Well, this is Germany. It's a lot easier to get a job here than elsewhere (once you climb on top of the 4.5 million registered unemployed bums, not to mention those other millions that aren't counted in the statistics). All you need are some skills that others don't have, and I'm an all round programmer with over 10 years of OOP experience under my belt being a mere 25 years - still a rarity in Germany. Heck, 50% of the people in my Theoretical Computer Science lecture still can't write a program which "from an array of 10 integers, extracts the two largest ones". No kidding.

Anyway, as for the Job: It's actually NOT for a full time job or anything - a student part-time job, but as a Mobile Games developer, nonetheless. Up to 20 Hours a week at most.

I'm happy since it's a job I can actually relate to (though the company is kinda far away... 40 minutes by train every day; sold my car earlier this year... duh!) and that opens up some additional career possibilities - in case I actually get the job, that is, haha.

As for Portfolio... having one would probably be better, yeah, and I'll see if I can put together two or three little games till next week; mainly, however, as an exercise because admittedly, I'm more of a C++ person than a Java person.

I'm kind of optimistic, but I also won't be too disappointed if it doesn't work out in the end. I am not the perfect person for such a job, but I'm also better at programming and designing stuff than most people I know at my University - and I'm a CS major. Either way it's really a new high this semester, which has been starting unbelievably well and just keeps getting better and better! I'm quite exhilarated, because things haven't been going too well the last years (just lots of bad luck, illness, etc.)!

Funny, I also got a mail a few minutes ago from the guy from that Sysadmin job I applied for - I'm in round two of the application process there, too, and they want to interview me on monday. I'll be going to show up there, though I'll probably have to decline - for obvious reasons.

A job as a game developer (design, planning, programming, together with real paid graphics and sound people on a team) is just so much more what I'd love to do compared to supervising the Novell networks at my university, and since I expect the pay at MEF to be moderately better than at the uni, I'll be willing to take the 'burden' of some 40 minutes on the train each day.

Maybe I can save some money and get a motorcycle in spring :)
