Heh.... ok seriously, has anyone written code in a not-so sober state? Did it compile/build? Did it run? Did it run right? Was is better than what you coulda done sober? I dunno, I bet there''s some funny stories out there.... Post any code you have ratman --------------- http://ratfest.org

#include <somebeer.alcohol>>

this should be

#include <iostream.h>

//the main function

int main()
{
cout << "
Hello World";
return (0);
}

If you place an infinate amount of monkeys in a room with an infinate amount of type-writers, it is likely that within time, they will have typed up the entire workings of Shakespeare.

Did you make that up on the spot, or were you actually drunk when writing the first bit?

What are the weirdest variable names youve come up with?
I often use poo, it short and easy to remember.

When I'm having major problems and get angry I start using profanity as variables.

Other times I use band names that I'm listenting to at the time.

That was during christmas, when all I ever knew how to do was display Hello World to the screen... I had a little too much EggNog or whatever it''s called, and then at first I started typing slowly and the best that I could, but after that I started lose interest and roll my hands around on the keyboard..

Interestingly enough, it didn''t compile nor run.

one time while i was doing C/C++ classes, my teacher asked me to do a stupid program(it was about something with arrays) but i already know how make that, and i asked him to give me the nest lesson, but he said that he won´t give me the next lesson until i finish the programm. i realy got upset so i made the program using idiot naming like:

(off curse in the original was in portuguese)

int stupidarray[10];
int idioticy;
int idiot;
int fuckedupcouter
int makestupidstuff(int);
void stupidtask();

i was never able to finish the program, it got just too confuse...

I occassionally start doing a routine, do all of the initialisation and all of the cleanup but then when it comes to the actual code:

int myfunc(char *someshit)
{
...
// Ah, get the f*cking thing to do whatever task it is used for
// Can''t be bothered at the moment, but we will see what we can do
...
}

Hehe, the only things that I typed when I was drunk was that amusing one with my friend... Hangon.. I''ll just check my site to see if I still have it there..

Nah, don''t have it... But I posted it up before

Do most people here program better when they are half asleep? Amazingly, I find this so, and when I go to read the code in the morning - I can''t even remember where I learned those types of techniques - but damn it works and works well. But even trying to change the variable names from "bob" "fred" "jim" "poo" and "foo" results in too many errors to count. Ah, the dream code

I''ve never been drunk. Or, hmm... it depends on how you define "drunk." I have been slightly confused a few times, but not so much that my typing would have suffered. I just couldn''t think straight.

When I can''t make up a variable name, I either think until I can invent a descriptive one or use Temp, Buffer or x when it''s appropriate.

Every one of my programs has a buffer variable in it. Usually along the lines of "char *buffer" or "char buffer[20]" . I think that the name "buffer" describes more what that particular variable does than any other name that I can think of

LOL!!! That is so true. Now i have to learn programming just so when people decompile my software I can diss them through my variables.

Um, unfortunately variable names are not preserved in decompilation/dissassembly. You would have to do something like this:

char decompiled_message[] = "So, you decompiled my program, eh?";

But VC++ optimisation features would probably eliminate it.

I always seem to do my best programming after I''ve had a bit to drink. For example, in one of my classes I had a project on operator overloading. Before-hand, I had no clue what to do and thought about not handing it in. Then I grabbed 2 beers, drank them quickly and was soon inspired. I had the thing done in about 20 minutes!

I tend to use x, y, and z and other combinations with other letters for some reason, like dx, nz, my, bz, fx, and other things, just because I need more than one x or y or z, not because those other letters symbolize anything. I also tend to abreviate stuff until they''re other words, like portal becomes port. I also put way too long winded comments, like "Okay, let''s try to do this..." then after that "I think it worked, but I''m not sure. Ahh, screw it". This is put in alot when trying to allocate memory.

Fredric: "If you place an infinate amount of monkeys in a room with an infinate amount of type-writers, it is likely that within time, they will have typed up the entire workings of Shakespeare"
That''s an interesting quote, I''ve actually seen it before. It applies to evolution. The thing is though, with the monkeys, not only would you have the shakespeare, but you would have an infinate amount of uniteligeable crap that the other monkeys banged out. When this is likened to real life, we see that there is no correlation. If the shakespeare is likened to the creation of man, then where is all the junk? If we look at our universe, with all the mathematical representation of everything, we soon realize that everything is indeed perfect, from humans, to rocks to galaxies to germs to whatever, everything is perfect. Nothing contradicts the rules of the universe, even if we don''t completely know what those rules are. there is no, to put it in the above example, monkey crap. So if perfection could be achieved at random, then what are the odds that everything in the univerese would randomly be perfect all at the same time and that there would be no monkey crap?

I'll go hide in the corner now. I use meaningful variable names. Darn, I knew I was doing something wrong!
