It would seem that not many people here have used cedega so I figued I would make a post and tell of what I have seen. TransGaming says that cedega can run games at near native Windows speeds and they arn't lying! The games I have run have run great, better than great! I can't believe it. However there is a down side. I have NO SOUND! cedega appears to have shaky ALSA support, so if you use OSS you should be fine. Some major drawbacks are sound support, and the website. The forum for members is very primative and almost impossible to search through for helpfull data. It isn't even divided into topics, every post appears on the same page, with all replies...lame. Also, I couldn't even find a tech support section for things like how to set up cedega to use ALSA. If I get sound working I would give it 10 thumbs up. If not I'll be pissed and not worrying about thumbs or stars or whatever. Edit: Just got sound working, stupid me didn't read the entire how-to. What games did you try when playing? If WineX is t hat good maybe I should give it a try too. It isn't free right?

I'd like to add my opinion on another wine-based product. Crossover Office. While not a free program, if you can't do without office xp/ internet explorer, outlook express, photoshop, etc, Crossover is a great way to go. It simulates windows reboots, registry, etc. Adding new software is as simple as running an install exe. I currently use regular 'ol wine, but if I had the money I would seriously consider crossover. I <3 Wine.

Tried any online games? Steam? Warfcraft on Battle.net?

All I have actually played is Warcraft III: Frozen throne. I did connect to battle.net, but didn't play on it (I always get pwned). It downloaded and installed the b.net patch just fine. It did not play the cinematics :(.


Edit: one crappy thing is how long it takes for a game to start, very long time indeed, but not as long as booting up my second computer so it's a fair trade.

I just remembered that when I played the original Fallout through Wine I didn't have working sound. Otherwise Fallout actually played better through wine than in W2k! (Using ALSA)

So is Cedega/WineX still free (I remember that you could get the CVS and compile it yourself)? Seems like I should really get it.

The paid-for version has parts that are not in CVS, but yes, the core of it is free in CVS.

I don't think the free version of cedega has the cd-rom access stuff in it. Meaning that any game with copy protection wont work with the free version. Plus you have to download and install everything manually with the free version but with the pay version they give you a nice .tgz file (or a .rpm for the gentoo impaired).

Cadega is amazing. I loved the cvs version so much I subscribed for $5 a month (minimum of 3 months). That provided access to voting, fancy gui interface( it actually tests your linux setup and show potential issue),lauch games from the gui and it lets you use cd that have copy protection. The cvs version works fine on all games provided you use the no cd crack.

BTW WC3, starcraft, diablo2, ut2k4 work just fine. The producers have been working with blizzard to guarantee WOW will be fully supported at the time of release. THis is really good stuff worth $5 (maybe more).

Just tell it to use OSS, ALSA has some OSS compatability modules for legacy apps. Normally your distro should load these modules into the kernel at boot time.
