I was wondering, are there grammar checking programs out there, preferably free? Since the English grammar is not my strong point, I could use one, especially when I am writting an article or tech document. Many people could use one, so I was wondering if there is such a program out there (should be a stand alone program, not a plug in).

Get a linguistics consultant or an editor to read it. If the paper is important, a grammar checker will only eliminate the most trivial mistakes. Imporant papers should always be human-supervised (that's why they have at least two other editors (not just any persons) read a newspaper article before it goes into print).

I recommend buying A Pocket style Manual by Diana Hacker. It 's a concise listing of grammar rules and it's put together in a fun to read way. I always keep by my computer even though I don't usually look at it.

Thanks, I'll download and try it.

Crispy, I know that a human is the best choice, but if it is a long document I don't feel like bothering someone else to read it, and even if I do, it's better to give them a cleaner document, to avoid embarassing mistakes.

I use ms word 97 a lot for this purpose, and spelling speaking of which.

Not free granted, though can usually get word in a works type package for an almost reasonable amount. Well, almost.

Given this, perhaps one of the open source word processors might be an option? www.abisource.com comes to mind, though I don’t know if it can perform this function or not (has been a bit since I used it last and I’m not finding what I’m looking for on their site *laugh* lots of other things though.)

Well, is a thought perhaps anyway. FWIW (=

MTW, thanks, I'll consider buying it.
Ok, downloaded and tired that program. It had a LOT of false alarms, stupid suggestions, and catched only two mistakes. One was that I started 3 sentences with the same word ("I") and the other that I had something like: "We did placed a link".
Sometimes it's even funny: "god damn" Please check if "god" followed by "damn" is an unusual word usage.

Seconded. I had a copy my freshman year of college (mostly for looking up MLA bibliography format), and it looked like it would have been fun to read if I had needed it.
