I am thinking to build an Octree structure with my 3D model data. However, I hesitate to build it immediately because I wonder if I add ONLY static objects in the Octree? Or I can add any objects into it, and when the objects are moving inside the Octree, it updates the object location in the Octree? But the cost of moving consumes searching in the Octree and updating the node. Is it too expensive in terms of process? or It yields the time from updating the Octree to rendering time? It also depends on situation, right? Anyone can help me with details? Thank you very much :) Andy

Loose octrees are a good alternative when dealing with dynamic objects (and static objects for that matter). With loose octrees you need only test the center point of an object to see what leaf it's in. You can also store the last node it was in, and only check neighbors if it moves out of that leaf. With this approach, the cost of keeping the tree updated should be minimal.
