My partner and I are writing an app for VB.NET that hopefully should act just like a desktop app. I proposed a feature where a user can click on a "?" button which would remain in its down state until the user clicked/hovered over a specific button or section. Now, instead of performing whatever command the button/section does, there would appear a small paragraph telling the user how the button works. Here's a small image that illustrates it better: Now, my partner says at this time it's not possible under the language we're using. But I've seen it action in websites like Macromedia's, though I'm not sure if it was done through conventional scripting. I personally don't see how it could be impossible. Who's right here?

It's done using DHTML and javascript. There's an example of it's use over on Dynamic Drive. Basically you hook the onMouseOver, onMouseOut events of an element and show a floating element (div, table, etc) with a higher Z value than the page. The help cursor is done via CSS - you can change the cursor icon to several different types if needed. If you keep track of a flag to denote if the user needs help or not you can control the popups from being displayed.

I'd collect those points for being right if I were you [wink]

Aha.

One more point: am I right in assuming Netscape would fart in my general direction if I used this?

Any Netscape user doesn't deserve to see the greatness you create.
