D3DFORMATs

I've been running some tests on a couple of different videocards, including: Geforce 4 TI 4400, ATI Radion 9600, 9600 XT, 9800 Pro. I found out that only the following formats were supported (REF and HAL gave the same results): D3DFMT_R5G6B5 = 16 bit D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8 = 32 bit I tested the following display formats as stated in the SDK: D3DFMT_A1R5G5B5 D3DFMT_A2R10G10B10 D3DFMT_A8R8G8B8 D3DFMT_R5G6B5 D3DFMT_X1R5G5B5 D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8 Which leads me to conclude that it's not really necessary to test for the other formats... How reliable is this information? I'm not really sure about the 16 bit formats, because I've heard that some video cards use 6 bits for green and others use 5. Is this still relevant to D3D applications as well? How do you decide which format to use when creating the device? Edit: Is it also true that only ONE format is available per bit per pixel catagorie ie: There is only one format for 16 bit and one format for 32 bit per videocard?

Yeah that's what i'm currently doing.
But still, is it safe to assume there is only one format available per bit depth?

Otherwise I'm going to end up with a huge list with resolutions which has duplicates in it, except for the format being used.

800 x 600 @ 60 Hz - 32 bpp - D3DFMT_XX1
800 x 600 @ 60 Hz - 32 bpp - D3DFMT_XX2
800 x 600 @ 60 Hz - 32 bpp - D3DFMT_XX3

That's my biggest concern at the moment.
