Computer Cooling...

Recently, my computer started to overheat while playing games, and had to shut down. I've been trying to keep the problem under control by pointing a floor fan at it. Although Sandra and the BIOS say that the temp is unchanged, The computer feels much colder (I'm assuming that that if the Motherboard was heating up, the computer would also heat up), and my games now run properly. Does this really work, or am I deluding myself?

After I put a passively cooled GeForce 2 in my old 475Mhz Compaq, it started locking up constantly. So I pulled the top off, and stuck a small house fan next to it. No more locking up.

So no, I don't think you're being delusional.

I have to keep the side of my case off all the time. Placing comps underneath closed desks is not a good idea, apparently. I have a 9800 and I think that's what is causing the problem. If I play the sims for too long it shuts down, but World of Warcraft runs just fine for hours. I have 2 fans in there already, what more do I need?

2 fans only, my comp has a total of 10 fans(including processor, graphics and PSU):D Everything is cooled, even the HD's (have their own fans) no RAM fans tho. It may be a bit noisy but haven't had any problems. And yes by adding more fans the temps did go down for heavy processor usage, idle was pretty cool before.

You could add in an extra fan or two to help the airflow maybe, if the front and back panel doesn't have any more free slots then you could also get one with 3 small fans that goes into the CD slot. You should also check your HD cage, some will allow you to put a normal 80mm fan on the front of that.

Also dont block the back of your computer, leave enough room for airflow so dont jam it against a wall or somethign.

Any computer cooling problem is solveed with ice cubes. Everyone knows that.

if you set up your [internal] fans right, it's better to keep the case closed, so the air can flow straight through from front to back (or however you want it)

Well, including cpu, gpu, and psu, I have 5 fans, but yeah I might need to get another couple. I have room for one more (currently one on the front, and one on the back, with two slots on the back).

I doubt anyone really needs more then 4 or 5 fans.. I have two, and things run just fine.. well, no.. i have 3.. the one in my power supply counts too..

anyway.. just make sure the air comes IN from the BOTTOM of the case and OUT from the top.. Not ness. the actualy top and bottom.. but just remember heat rises "eh".. port the 'hot' air out the top area, and pull cool air in the bottom..

If you just have a ton of random fans blowing, it just sort of swirls around in there, never actually being replenished..

i have this great idea where i cover every part of my computer in hairspray, and completely fill it with water.

that probably kicks the ass of any other method.

worth a try...
