I saw Relic (Dawn of War, Homeworld 2, Impossible Creatures) looking for a co-op student to develop tools. They didn't require knowledge of MFC, but did say it would be a bonus to know them so I can only assume that they use it.

That's a pretty vague question. What kind of information are you looking for?

I've heard of a lot more people starting to use .NET and Windows Forms for developing tools in replace of MFC. After doing a little programming in both, I can say that Windows Forms is definetly much easier, and the development time is shorter.

I agree with wyrzy. I've made applications using Win32 API, MFC, .NET, and Qt. And I've touched wxWidgets :P Everythings better than MFC and Win32 API. But .NET really blew me away, it's incredibly simple and it has EVERYTHING you ever need.

If you want cross platform development I'd recommend wxWidgets. Although Qt is a bit stronger, it comes with a weird license and costs money...

Just think of how much time you actually want to spend coding, and how much time you want to spend using the tool. Choose what's fastest to code, becuase feature requests might come from your artist and if you've painted yourself into a corner with say MFC you're not gonna by a happy camper... ;)

gamedev.net hosts an article about using MFC to create a .md3 model viewer, its a very good introduction to using MFC for creating tools
