I was rooting through my old games for NES\SNES\N64 and I came across bomberman 64. Now my game had been damaged by my brother so it was unplayable in that state. So I looked back in some old nintendo power magazines, and thought to myself. Whats wrong with me? Is it challenge that I thirst for? It has to be, I mean try beating the average NES game in 48 hours. So I borrowed my friends old copy of bomberman 64, and much to my suprise I really enjoyed it. Here's the thing that's bothering me. I'm sure that at the time Bomberman was released, it did use a fair amount of graphics power, relitivly. But today it seems as if the screenshots have to be top notch otherwise the devolopers think they won't sell. For myself, all of the games I play are the ones that are word of mouth. If I have a friend who enjoys any game I haven't heard of, I'll try it. It's usually the games that aren't blown out of proportion that seem to entertain me more. I remember playing mindwipes game about the beer shortage, that was a damn fun game(*cough* sequal? *cough*). Simple, tricky, but fun. That's how old games used to be. Now it just seems pretty hard to get a decent challenge anymore. I just got back from beating TMNT2, the new game for GC, xbox, or whatever ... Took me 3 hours, pretty sad, concidering I still haven't beaten TMNT 1 for NES. Am I the only one that turns to classic gaming for a challenge?

If you want a challenge, but up to date graphics, play Ikaruga.

Raptor was awesome, but tyrian was better. I wish I could find a place to buy tyrian (or dl it if the developers released it free... I only ever had the shareware version of it). It sucks that sound works in neither of the games in WinXP =-(

Oh wait...that's...new? My bad...gotta put in a plug every chance I get.

I agree on the Ikaruga, because it's just so much pure, unadulterated fun. Not that that's a word, but you know how it works.
Things change.

Wow, I just saw a video of it. It looks pretty damn wild, I may just go rent it when I get some spare time. :P

I remember getting alot of apogee games off my neighbour, they were pretty fun. What ever happened with that company?
On another note, I had mentioned Bomberman64 because it was one of those games that was challenging at times, although it was pretty easy to beat the game, there was another zone that needed 120 gold cards to unlock. Which gave new reason to the game after you beat it. Not only that, 4 player multiplayer was a blast (err .. bad pun).

What about any sidescroller games? I used to love all the 2d sidescrollers, but they seem all but extinct. What I really liked was that 3D sidescrolling level in smash bro's. Why haven't many games caught on to this?

aww the nostalgia.
(I have the full version of Raptor and am currently working on Ikaruga)

small rockets has a pretty decent raptor clone.

other than that, knock yourselves out with the abandonware of the-underdogs.org and oldgames.nu.

There were games like this, at first. Remember The Lost World on PSX? That's how the game was. Even recently, you have Viewtiful Joe and soon VJ2. And now you also have Gish, which I haven't played but apparently is very good. (It's a sidescroller where you play a ball of tar. [B^)

Aw man, my friends and I all fooking loved Bomberman 64. That game took me forever to get all the gold cards, and the multiplayer was insanely fun. I really wish Hudson would make another Bomberman game with that kind of multiplayer. As much fun as classic Bomberman multiplayer is, I think Bomberman 64 had the best multiplayer mode in the series. I want more!

On a similar note, I bought Bomberman Generation back when it first came out for GameCube, and that game is just weak. I am very disappointed with it.

Oh, and as for Ikaruga, I find that game to be a bit too hard. I'm all for a challenge, especially considering how simple most games are today, but that game is just nuts.

How was the challenge in that game? What I liked about bomberman 64 was that it offered alot of challenge because of the awkward controls and puzzles. But yeah, multiplayer was definatly gold, it's one of those games that if you have a bunch of friends who are playing; the game won't end until someone has to leave. For some reason I remember laughing alot during multiplayer. :P
