I can store graphs using arrays or pointers. What are these two methods called respectively? I thought the array approach was called "connection arrays" or "proximity arrays" or "edge grids" or somthing but can't remember exactly, and I completely forgot what the linked pointer approach is called. I am writing to a prof and don't want to sound too incredibly stupid. Thanks.

A tree? (i.e. a directed acyclic graph?)

The boost website might help you out, read some of the docs on the boost graph library.
